I was buying walnuts yesterday, and have never thought to check the ingredients.  I mean,  what's in walnuts right?  I felt urged to check the ingredients of the most popular brands of walnuts, and guess what.  They were all coated with corn oil to preserve freshness.  I couldn't believe it!  I buy organic when ever I can, but the store that sells organic walnuts is quite a distance from me.

Go figure.  I guess you can't take anything for granted.

I agree with you, Cynthia.  I also was buying walnuts at the grocery store and thought nothing of it.  One day I read the ingredients and it had some preservative (BHT I think) added to them.

I now buy organic at the HFS.  They taste incredibly better, no bitter taste like the ones from the grocery store and no added ingredients.

It's amazing how much food has had a "little something" added to it.

I dont know about other stores, but even in the bulk bins at WF, if it's covered/coated w/ anything, it's listed on the label.  and yeah, walnuts shouldnt need anything added.  ::) ;) :)

Not only do you need to check labels on new things, but on things you buy often as well. Companies are continually trying to cut costs, and often I'll find that an item that I buy regularly has had its ingredients changed. Grr.

I checked the label yesterday when I bought from the bulk bin, and the ingredients just said walnuts.

It's amazing how many things I  like are bad news... for instance, so many of the soy milks have oodles of bad things in them.  The dried cherries I like have added sugar.  I never even thought of looking at the bin of bulk walnuts... hmm...
I was just out of town with all of my husband's family for a week, and  for once I did really GREAT staying on the BTD... but I read every label when we used prepared things... did mostly fresh stuff when we cooked... I shudder to  think of the couple of times we went out to dinner, but  everything seemed to be ok...
