Hello Everybody!

I was just wondering how common it was to find that a type of food listed as beneficial wouldn't be tolerated well by some people.

Has it ever happened to you?  Did the bad symptoms go away after a while or are you still reacting badly to the same food?  Does it make any difference if you are more or less compliant?

I have a very bad time with prunes. One bite and I'm out for three days with diarrhea, nausea and total fatigue. I've tried the unsulfured organic kind and they do the same thing. So--no prunes for me. Mangoes give me grief too, unless they're dead ripe.

There used to be a type A yahoo group on which there was someone allergic to soy.

Thank you for all the answers so far.  Sorry that you have these reactions to food that you would otherwise (I imagine) be happy to eat :(.  I wonder whether one day you'll be able to go back to it and benefit from it: I guess only time will tell.

Still, the fact that there are few replies (at least for the moment) to this thread might mean that very few experience such a problem...  (book2)

sweet potatoes!  and i am big time dismayed about it.  

i've tried to eat 'em alone away from protein and on empty stomach to no avail.  they make me bloat to the point of maternity.  

i primarily have eaten them with ghee and can't recall if i've tried without.  should i chance it?  does anyone recommend any combination food that might help me digest the sweeties?  

i don't mind whatsoever avoiding white potatoes but avoiding these has caused much grieving!

My boyfriend an AB gets the worst ezcema from wheat or soy in even the smallest amounts. I dont do well with soy either except with miso occasionally which is my only beneficial soy product anyway and most beans give me trouble. I cant tolerate even a quarter of a prune ( I have tried), it gives me diarehha and gas pains. Grains dont do well with me because I gain weight from them. I wish I could do the grains and soy, I love them so much and was one of the perks of being an A when I started.

I just wanted to let you all know that one of the reasons I started this thread was because I was wondering about beans, well, about the ones which are among the bennies for type A.

I'm still struggling with them, in terms of digestion, and I've decided to have a little break from them.  I'm hoping that once my body settles down a bit and gets rid of more toxins I won't have amy more problems with them.  I just need to wait and see because I'm still too new to BTD to have a definitive answer.

I've gone back to lentils though, which at the beginning of the diet were making me feel really bloated, and now I don't have any problems with them: I'm really happy about that.

Me too!  :'(

Some times I can have them with no consequences but others I get horrid pains in my muscles.

I am working on understanding when they hurt me. I do my sweet potatoes with vapor/steam and keep them in the fridge till they finish but no more than 3 days. The muscle pain tends to happen on day three of a pre-cooked sweet potato. I do not know if it is due to storage or due to having sweet potato to frequently.

But it does not always happen on day 3 so... I like them so much I am willing to keep on testing till i get the answer ;D

I don't do well with any type of raw nutbutter... almond butter! I love it.. guess it's a neutral for me, but whenever I eat it, I go straight to a coma.. so foggy... and I can't have peanut butter.. I've tried walnut butter and pumpkin seed nutbutter, but they're both difficult to come by and I don't  like the taste as much.  

I had been trying to get back to some vegetarian ways, but found I was gaining weight, so I'm back to more meat.. less nuts..  but anyway, almond butter kills me... I can tolerate a few almonds on the salad now and then...

Are you presoaking your beans until they are uniformly soft?  It is important to presoak and cook them proper for good digestion.  Adding a small one inch strip of kombu seaweed helps to assist with eating beans.

Prunes: Gives me flatulance and foamy bowels :B. Have tried all brands, no luck.

Nuts & Beans: Have to be the barest of bare minimum-like 1 table spoon on alternate days.

Green Tea: Gives me a headache :-/, have tried all brands.

Eggs: Gives me painful acne along my jaw line. My skin usually is blemish free. So I'm testing out May to be egg-free. But there goes another source of protein ::)...

I presoak them overnight, in plenty of filtered water.  I actually change the water I soak them in a few times.  Also when I start cooking them I follow the advice of an ayurvedic cookery book I've got and I boil them for a few minutes, throw the water away and replace it with fresh water and carry on cooking them for the necessary time.

I've never seen kombu seaweed around.  I must into it: thanks for the tip  ;D

Sound like you are doing the right thing....
I donīt do weel on my beans either ( mainly the kidneys are bad news - lima better)
I do eat them occasionally but only in small ammout and always with other bennies that way I seem to digest them better.

I donīseem to do well with lamb....
If it is 100 % fatfree = expensive cuts like tenderloin... fine
- but other cuts and especially ground meat  I get diarea...

Henriette - that might be the right answer for me too!  There's no doubt that next time I go for beans I'll start with a small portion  ;)

I think you can build up on the beans...

I seem to do well with beans and yoghurt/kefir- seem to help each other.

Yes, I did follow that tip the first time it was suggested to me, but I guess my body was still a bit confused about what was going on and wasn't that happy about beans even with the help of live yogurt...

I'm hoping it's just a matter of time...  ;)

Sometimes beans get me bad, and other times I have no trouble.  I always fix them exactly the same way, so I don't know what the difference is.  But bean issues are a carbohydrate that's difficult to break down and causes gas during the process.  Being an avoid or a beneficial isn't going to change that (although it would be really neat if the beneficial beans didn't cause gas and the avoid ones did).

My AB daughter has big troubles with soy and eggs.  Hoping eventually she'll be able to eat them.

My husband, formerly intolerant of eggs and dairy, since being on the BTD a while, can now eat them on a daily basis.  So it worked for him nicely.

You know, I'd be willing to bet that the problem some of you are having with prunes isn't really the prunes themselves but mold that grows on/in them.

Rye gives me mucous problems - post nasal drip, stuffy nose, etc.  Pinto beans give me a lot of gas but not enough to make me stop eating them...other beans I've tried aren't as noticeable for me.  I eat beans about once a week.  Most of the other foods that seem to give me trouble are neutral for Type A non-secretors.

do you soak all your beans and grains overnight?
tossing the water where they were soaked is also important...use fresh water next day for cooking........

I have often heard that dairy after beens is very good, especially for gas problems. I do not tend to get gas with beans, actually they suit me fine, but I would like to know if the ones that started the advice are B's ;D

That's a very interesting point.  If that's the case, how could one get rid of the mold?  I've recently found some prunes that don't need presoaking and have no additives/preservatives, but I'm wondering whether they might have that very same problem...

It appears that you are presoaking and cooking your beans correctly.  Adding the kombu may help.

Please let us know if you try this step and your results.

I had decaffeinated coffee and experienced surging pain on the right side of my head so I no longer have coffee. You might have seen my thread about that.

Was it a store-bought decaf, or a Whole Foods/organic decaf?  I've heard that the chemicals used to decaffeinate coffee are really aweful.  You might have been reacting to them.
