I have a severe anxiety about going totally no-grain: that I will become too thin. Anytime I avoid grains I lose a lot of weight and I really dislike the thin look. I like a shapely body. One time I went down to a size four and I couldn't deal with it! I HAD to regain those pounds! So how do you no-grainers keep the pounds on? I'm 5.5 and weigh nearly 130 pounds and I don't want to lose an ounce of them! |

Well, I'm not one to talk because I'm too thin but being a no-grainer is the only way I can keep weight on. I eat a lot of quality fats though, this should help you maintain weight and improve your health |

your BMI is 21.6 so yes you don't need to loose wait
why no grain...I'm an O secretor and I eat Spelt, brown rice, rye, kamut sometimes, and manna bread...either two slices of bread (rye, spelt or manna) max a day or a serving of grains in form of a pasta made from spelt, rice or kamut or a nice serving of brown rice
you don't need to go totally no grains unless you're a non secretor or you're celiac or gluten sensitive |

diffy, Once you get your secretor status checked, you will be better armed to make decisions like this one. If you are an O nonnie, you might be more likely to especially benefit from a totally grain-free diet. You can keep the weight on by eating plenty of ghee, olive oil, fatty fish, grass-fed beef and lamb. I think it's important for type O's to eat substantial meals, since your blood type is designed to work hard, play hard, exercise hard and eat hearty!! You could always begin by eliminating all gluten grains and working with the smallest recommended portion of grains in the LR4YT book. |

I am on a gluten-free casein-free diet and have been for over a year now. What's been keeping me satisfied is the gf homemade breads I bake. But I have chronic inner/middle ear inflammation. For the past few months I've had severe muscle weakness, anxiety, sleeplessness, irritability, inflammation, nervous stomach, a host of other issues....so to be on the safe side I thought I'd follow the non-secretor guidelines....I'm in NY and it's illegal to ship saliva out or in. So gotta go without the test and go with how I feel, eh? Last I heard spelt contains gluten, as does kamut. |

If you are in NY, you have a few options: 1) Lewis test can be used to infer secretor status: Lewis a-b+ is secretor, a+b- is non-secretor. This is a blood test that you can ask your doctor or a clinic to run. 2) If you know someone outside NY state, but nearby, you can get the secretor test shipped to them, then send back your saliva from there too. 3) Dr. D has a clinic in Conneticut and if you make a trip up there to see him, perhaps they can collect your saliva there and send it off for you. |

The Lewis test is about 90% accurate in determining secretor status. There are a small percentange, (double lewis negatives) where the secretor status is not determinable by the lewis testing. |

You can still eat grains if you have alot of anxiety about your posted concern. I would encourage you to stick to only the beneficial grains in the lowest portion/frequency recommendations as outlined in LR or one of the Health Series books if you are following a specific BTD health plan.

I think my body detests grains! Of all sorts! Even the gluten-free oats I've been on for some time now. So today was my first grain-free day, we'll see what happens as the week comes along...
Here's the gf/cf bread recipe I've been doing for some time now; my kids love it! This double recipe fills three loaf pans, you can half the ingredients for less bread. I dod this in my food processor, with the s-blade (blade rests on bottom of bowl), it's a liquidy/sticky batter.
6 cups gf oat flour 1/2 cup oil 1 cup soy milk or substitute (I use apple juice for a sweeter bread) 1 and 1/2 cups warm water (for real sweet bread I substitute with apple juice as well) 1 and 1/2 teaspoon salt 4 eggs
In a separate bowl/cup/plate dissolve 2 T. sugar in about 3 T. warm water then add 21 gm. dry yeast (I use the Fleishman's or Red Star fast-rising yeast; they come three-on-a-strip; I use two strips which is basically 6 single packs).
Pour ingredients into bowl in the order that they appear. Mix for a minute or two then add 4-6 teaspoons xanthan gum (to keep the dough together, remember this doesn't have gluen and it crumbles all the way, xanthan gum to the rescue...)
spoon batter into pans and let rise some, then bake on 400 for 50-60 minutes.
Enjoy!

Thank you for sharing your gluten free bread recipe with us.
What is the texture and taste of the final bread once it is baked? Is it a sandwich-style bread or is it a sweet/quick type of bread, such as essence bread?

Heidi We have no rating for cellulose gum or xanthan gum per se. With few exceptions, gums enhance the effects of lectins. Cellulose gum may be one of those exceptions if memory serves me well, but xanthan gum is something to stay away from if at all possible.

You folks here seem to be seasoned er4yt's! Boy, the amount of knowledge you possess!!! I'm amazed! Oh well, it's only my second day on here and I'm deluged with new info...will take time to process.....so glad to learn xanthan gum can be replaced with ground soaked linseed.
The texture, iduno, hard to tell, it's chewy, yeah, rather chewy. I'm ditching it for now but I enjoyed it as long as I had it! |

Alia vo, I've never tasted essence bread so I wouldn't know how it compares. I've made tuna sandwiches with this bread, as well as peanut butter sandwiches, avacado sandwiches. You can slice as thin or thick as you like. I'm thinking of replacing the oat flour with rice flour and the xanthan gum with the linseed thing, but what about the yeast, is that an avoid or allowed? |

The best way for me to keep weight on my 5"5 frame is to do alot of weight bearing exercise at least 3-4X per week for about an hour. I weigh 121 lbs on a good day and look quite healthy, but my grain intake is more like that of an O non-secretor, from 0 to 3 or 4 servings per week, even though recommended is 4-6 per week for an A nonnie who is rh negative. Surely as an O, something similar to this may work for you as well. |

Again, I would recommend the Allergy Health Series book... There are 5 ratings to divide foods between Super Beneficial, Beneficia, Neutral: Allowed Frequently and Allowed Infrequently, and Avoid. the Infrequent Neutrals should be treated like avoids in most cases... It has been very good for me to follow this so even the few Neutral foods I eat are the better ones rather than marginal... It is another refinement that can help make faster progress with the health issues. |

If you get your lewis typing, a-b-, lewis double-negative, is also recommended to follow the non-secretor guidelines. |

Ok, where can I order the lewis test? And why bother if there's a chance it's inaccurate? |

If I remember correctly, the Lewis test is ordered by your doctor...
Quoted from diffy

The ideal method is to do the Secretor test, but it is not available in NY... The next best is to do the Lewis test which has about a 10% error rate... The reason to get the information is to be able to fine tune the diet for your body so the healing progresses as rapidly as possible... A less specific way to make sure you eat as desired no matter what the Secretor status is to make sure you verify the foods comply for both Secretor and Non... This goes no matter whether you are eating all Beneficials or all Beneficials and Neutrals... This method may be more strict than is necessary, however, because you may eliminate some foods that are good tasting and good for you... |
