I've been doing the eat right for about 3-4mo. and haven't really lost much weight. Am I eating too much, not enough. I'm type A and have been following it very well only eating fish once and week and nothing else. I would like to lose 10lbs. I also brisk walk 4-6 days a week, do push-ups and sit-ups on alternated days with 10lb weight for arms and back. Anyone have any suggestions? Maybe I'm eating too many nuts?
Hi Carrie and welcome to the BTD forums! I think more information would be useful for us to help you figure out why you're not losing! Could you post a sample of your daily menu? How compliant are you? Can you give us any more info on your currnet health status? physical problems? medications? How much weight do you want/need to lose? How did you find out your blood type? Do you know your secretor status? I know that some type A posts I have seen here mention A's having a slower return seeing weight loss than we Os have. I sure many others will be along shortly to help out!
10# isn't very much. Muscle weighs more than fat, so building muscle may outweigh the fat loss ... you might even end up heavier in weight but much more fit. Weight is just one of many things to look at .... how's a-bout belt size loss, or inches trimmed off?

Well, I'm 36, I'm still nursing my 17mo. old. I'm 5'6" and weigh 135. I started the BTD because I was feeling really wiped out in the afternoon after lunch, then would pick up late afternoon and would be totally ready to go to bed by 8:00. I also was having symptoms of hypoglycemia and would have blood sugar crashes. A friend talked to be about what she did for type A so I read the book and tried it. Wow! The difference is amazing. My energy level boosted to where I was having to make myself go to bed at 10:00 so I could get up in the morning with my kids, I have 5 by the way. And I stopped having blood sugar crashes all together. My daily intake goes sorta like this:
yesterday AM-1 egg, 1piece Ezekial no snack Lunch-1 rice cake with peanut butter, strawberry spread, carrots and snow peas snack-yogurt Dinner-Black bean soup, and some Quinoa & Brown rice crackers
I suggest you add a lot more vegetables to your diet. I usually eat a full plate of vegetables at every meal and sometimes snack on vegetables.
I also suggest that you try to eat a lot more beneficial food versus just neutral foods. Dr. D has stated that the real power of the BTD is in the beneficial foods.
You might also try upping your protein intake, for instance eating fish more often or adding a protein powder/fruit smoothie as an occasional snack.

Don's recommendation is very sound. I also noticed that you are eating a very small amount of food, I would guess, in an attempt to lose weight. But the type of food you eat is crucial also.
Vegetables are great weight loss aids, especially beneficial ones. Think of neutral as food for variety and balanced vitamin/mineral content. Think of beneficial foods as tonics, healers, miracle workers! Avoids are basically poisons. So it's the beneficials that need to be the cornerstone of our food life.
Fish and poultry protein will let your body know that it is not starving, and does not need to store fat!

I also forgot to mention that you should try to cut down on grains, because you are currently eating some grains with every meal.
Yes, protein will probably help with the sweet cravings. Also try the following.
Quoted from Dr. D
Very Often, this type of sugar reaction complicates an otherwise nice result from the diet. Usually, it is just that the liver is having some problems adjusting to the new way of eating and needs some rehabilitation. Try taking the herb milk thistle for a few weeks, and drink a cup of licorice root tea at about 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM (don't use if you have high blood pressure).

I also am new to BTD--officially started today, actually. And have been watching this thread with interest, since weight loss is a concern of mine.
Generally speaking, what would be an ideal frequency for eating of grains? I do have the original book, and it offers a good start (and I realize that everyone is different), but the book is a little confusing to me, because it looks like caucasian A's can have up to 9 servings of whole grain cereals per week, and up to 6 servings of pasta, and up to 5 servings of bread and up to 2 muffins per day, and up to 4 servings of grains in general.
If I was to eat just the daily bread allotment and nothing more, I would be eating grain at every meal.....Do the guide charts somehow overlap each other, or is the original ER4YT book just seriously outdated or am I missing something else?

Yes I would advise eating more, adding more veggies and protein, and turning your day upside down. Make protein the focus of your breakfast and lunch, with lots of veggies of course. Eat more early in the day, and eat sparsely later in the day. I bet that might help with the weight loss.
Embracing my A-ness! (Ok, that is waaaay better in print than it is out loud! )
I agree that you need to eat more, and learn your secretor status.
I am also type A and I have lost 35 pounds since October. Granted, I had more to lose than you do, but I did it by eating at least 6 times a day. Even when I wasn't necessarily hungry. I would keep things like carrots, brocolli, and cucumbers on hand all the time and try to eat them at predetermined intervals.
I would also suggest trying a different form of exercise. When I first started doing Pilates I lost weight and inches like an ice cube melting in the sun. I have also given Yoga a try lately and it's a lot harder than it looks. Either of these forms of exercise will strengthen your whole body and give your type A mind/spirit more of what you are looking for in your workout. I used to lift weights, run, and do things like Tae-Bo, but after my workout I would actually feel stressed and uneasy. After Pilates or Yoga I feel energized, charged, but more relaxed at the same time.
Good luck with your progress! Please keep checking in to let everyone know how you are doing.
Are you drinking plenty of water? I started drinking at least 8-10 cups of water every day, and my weight has started to go down almost effortlessly. I don't have much weight to lose either, but I have lost 5 pounds in the last three weeks. I am 5'2" and now weigh 123.
yesterday AM-1 egg, 1piece Ezekial no snack Lunch-1 rice cake with peanut butter, strawberry spread, carrots and snow peas snack-yogurt Dinner-Black bean soup, and some Quinoa & Brown rice crackers
water and green tea to drink throughout the day
I want to lose 10lbs.
I would substitute more beneficial foods for the neutrals. Beneficial foods act as medicine for your body and assist with metabolism.
Question: what are the ingredients in your strawberry spread? If it contains any gums or avoids, any type of avoid item does hinder weight loss efforts.
100% compliancy is advised if weight loss is one's health goal.
Pay particular attention to the portion/frequency guidelines if you need 'structure' to adhere to.
In addition to light cardio and strength training, adding calming exercises such as tai chi, yoga, alternate nostril breathing will assist to lower cortisol levels which will assist blood type A's with stress and weight management.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I have tried to cut grains to one time a day and that seems to have helped with the sweet cravings. How long before I notice weight loss? And should you have the grains in the am or pm or your day?

I only eat beneficial grains such as amaranth, buckwheat groats, and rye manna. I start my day with about less than a portion of grains; I have my other half serving of grain in the evening.
One whole single portion serving of grain at one sitting is alot of grain/starch for myself to digest.
Protein is designated for my lunch meal; this keeps me mentally alert.

I've found that if I eat grains in the morning, I bonk around 10am. If I eat them at night, I don't mind as much. But for me, I am refraining from grains for now. I really seem to do best when I eat 4 servings a week, and lately it's been like 15. Ugh. Grains make me crave more grains, which is what has been happening lately.
