Description

Haplogroup L1 is a human mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplogroup.

Haplogroup L1 is found in West and Central sub-Saharan Africa. It is especially common among the Khoisan people.

L1 also has special significance for all living humans. The earliest mitochondrial lineage was haplogroup L0, which arose with Mitochondrial Eve. However, the L0 lineage is extinct, and all existing human haplogroups are descended from haplogroup L1.

Among these descendants are the African haplogroups L2 and L3, the latter of which gave rise to all non-African haplogroups.

Haplogroup L1 is believed to have first appeared in Africa approximately 150,000 to 170,000 years ago.
