Description

A biogenic amine is a biogenic substance with an amine group. Some prominent examples include neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine, catecholamines, and serotonin. Other examples include

  • Norepinephrine, a neurotransmitter in the catecholamine family that mediates chemical communication in the sympathetic nervous system, a branch of the autonomic nervous system
  • Histamine, an important amine involved in many allergic reactions
  • Serotonin, a substance capable of affecting the mind, blood pressure, body temperature, and other bodily processes.
  • Polyamines are important components of cells growth.
