Baked Figs with Almonds

Description:
A simple but rich treat, this is especially good during the cooler months. You can store the figs in a jar with bay leaves between the layers to add a little extra flavor. I've also made this recipe with walnuts and it was just as good.


General applicability:

Baked Figs with Almonds

Ingredient list:
  • 24 dried figs
  • 24 almonds (or nut of choice)
  • peel of one lemon, chopped in small pieces


How to make it:
  • Wash the figs in warm water and dry.
  • Cut each fig butterfly-style and lay them out on a cookie sheet. (I used parchment to keep the figs from sticking to the sheet, but an ungreased cookie sheet is fine.)
  • Place several pieces of lemon peel on one of the butterflied figs. Place an almond or nut on each side of the fig, over the lemon peel.
  • Place another butterflied, unfilled fig on top of the fig filled with the lemon peel and nuts. Press the two figs together well.
  • Bake at 350F/177C/Mark 4 for 10 minutes, turning them over once. The figs are done when they are slightly browned and fragrant. Your time and temperature may vary, just keep an eye on the figs.
