Solanum tuberosum : Potato

Molecular structure of

Solanum tuberosum

Lecster ID:605 Edit Entry
Source Organism:Potato
Species:Solanum tuberosum
Common Nomenclature:STA
Class:Chitin-binding lectins
Index Nomenclature:LECp.Sol.Tubtu.Hch1
Characterization Notes:The respective antifungal properties of lectin and chitinases were studied by following their effects against early developmental stages of Fusarium oxysporum, a fungal potato pathogen. See: C R Acad Sci III 1993 Aug;316(8):788-92 The lectin content in the tubers varies considerable according to the variety. STA shares some sequence similarities with the extensin family, hevein lectin family and snake venon disintegrins (platelet aggregation inhibitors) Plant J. 1994 (5); 849-861
Biological Activity:STA agglutinates group A erythrocytes at a titer of 1:64; group B erythrocytes at a titer of 1:128; group O erythrocytes at a titer of 1:256; by crude lectin preparation (16mg/ml). See: Int J Cancer (1970); 6:283 STA agglutinates bovine, sheep, horse, pig, cat, guinea pig, rat and mouse erythrocytes as well as human. See: Meth. Enzymol. 1978 (50); 307-345
Source Tissue:Tuber
Specificity:GlcNAc (oligomers): A major protein of the tuber is the chitin-binding lectin. STA binds to some glycoproteins (e.g. fetuin and ovomucoid)
Inhibitors:GlcNAc does not inhibit the agglutination of STA. See: Biochem J. 1973 (135); 307-314
References:Biochem J 1992 May 1;283 ( Pt 3) :813-21 J. Biol Chem 1982 (258); 2886-2891
