|
Molecular structure of West indian coral tree:ECA, EcoL
| Erythrina corallodendron
|
| Lecster ID:219 | Edit Entry |
| Source Organism: | West indian coral tree |
| Species: | Erythrina corallodendron |
| Common Nomenclature: | ECA, EcoL |
| Class: | Legume lectin |
| Index Nomenclature: | LECp.Ery.Cor.se.Hga1 |
| Characterization Notes: | Most people carry natural antibodies to ECA, although they do not interfere with its agglutinating properties. See: FEBS Lett 1996 Nov 18;397(2-3):139-42 The genus Erythrina comprises over 100 species of deciduous leguminous trees and shrubs. Lectins from over 20 species of this family have been isolated. See: Phytochemistry 1985 (24); 2803-2809 |
| Biological Activity: | The Erythina lectin agglutinates human erythrocytes with a preference for group B and O cells over A cells. See: Canad J Biochem 1981 (59); 315-320 The lectin also agglutinates rat, rabbit, dog, mouse and sheep erythrocytes after treatment with papain or neuraminidase. The lectin is mitogenic towards human lymphocytes but only after treatment with neuraminidase. See: J. Biol Chem 1994 (269); 8554-8563 Erythrina corallodendron lectin can be used to detect the H/HI blood groups. See: Zentalblatt fur Bacteriologic 1991 (275); 343-350 |
