I have heard people make the same comments about weight gain.

However, since you purchased them from GNC nothing would suprise me. According to news releases in the recent past GNC has gone into a partnership with Monsanto. Monsanto is the manufacturer of the deadly DDT, nutrasweet, rBGH, and most recently the back bone behind genetic engineering. I personally won't buy anything from there. There is absolutely no way of knowing what is being done to their products.
Just go to netfind or excite and key in rBGH, Monsanto or Nutrasweet. You will find lots of reliable information (including court documents)
