It's a measure of how fast the erythrocytes (red blood cells) settle at the bottom of a test tube. Faster sedimentation rates indicate that proteins may be present that induce that; you will probably either get some further testing, or it will be more interpretable by your physician in the context of the other parts of your test panel.
