Dogs have several blood types

If I remember correctly, there are at least 5 major blood types in domestic dogs. There is no universal donor as there is with type O- humans, but there is one dog blood type that isn't rejected by dogs of other types. For that reason most veterinary surgical facilities have a dog of that blood type available for use as a blood donor in the event another dog needs blood. There was recently an article in the Seattle Times about one such dog who's been used as a donor for a number of years. I think they were celebrating his birthday or something.
