The Armchair Nutritionist had posted a page on the subject a long time ago.

Basically, if you have an iodine deficiency, your body will absorb iodine if you just paint a patch on your skin. Optimum level is when one 10c patch lasts for 24 hours. Anything less means yoiu have a deficiency.
