Dr. D: Licorice, hyperestrogenism,& hypoglycemia: Are we poisoning ourselves?

Dr. D'Adamo:

Hyperestrogenism is often implicated as an important cause of
hypoglycemia in women. Licorice, which you recommend in ER4YT
to counteract hypoglycemia, is estrogenic. Since B's have
so many endocrinal problems to begin with, is it wise for us (at
least the females among us) to mess with licorice?

I am not looking for individual advice here, just a comment on your recommendation
of licorice for type B's. But here is some background:

I suffer from hypoglycemia (typical for B's) caused by hyperestrogenism (probably
also typical for B's, judging from comments on the B board). Until
I found out (last week) that licorice was estrogenic, I was drinking 3-4 cups
per day of the tea. Now I'm concerned that I've been poisoning myself, and
that the hypoglycemia "cure" has exacerbated its cause. I'm down to 1 cup
per day, as that is what my AKDC has said is safe. But both the hypoglycemia
and the estrogen overload have gotten much worse.

I am taking pyrodoxine to try to metabolize some of the estrogen, and natural
progesterone capsules to counterbalance it. I'm also taking milk thistle to
help support the liver.

Could you share your thoughts about the role of licorice in hormonal
imbalances and in the blood-type diet?

Thank you, Martha
