I share your caution.
While looking for answers about the clay method,
it seems that the bentonite clay has a history of being
used experimentally on livestock to get rid of aflatoxins,
but that it also reduces availability of several minerals.
The reference below showed loss of available copper over several
week's use. Another showed loss of available magnesium.

Doesn't look like eating bentonite is something
to do continuously, or a lot of.
