In Response To: eating (drinking) clay (Louise)
There was a scholarly article about 10 years ago in (I think) the Journal of Chemical Ecology which said that Dine (Navaho) can put some special clay in with a variety of potato that contains higher levels of alkaloids than the commerical kind. The clay binds the alkaloids tightly enough so it is ok to eat the (somewhat gritty) cooked mashed potatoes. But how much and which kind of clay I don't know. Thanks for having the candor to share what some of the consequences can be! I am wondering about the smell since that usually means a shift in population of microflora and different end-products of digestion. I hope Peter has the time to comment.
