Pharmaceuticals persist in the environment; please eat healthy

In Science News (Mar 21, 1998, Vol. 153:187) Janet Raloff reviews recent research which shows that pharmaceuticals are showing up in water supplies. Notably, high blood pressure medicine clofibric acid has been found in Swiss lake water. Some male fish in Lake Mead (Nevada) are producing an egg-making protein normally found only in reproductive females; this is thought to possibly be connected to the levels of estrogens (from birth control pills) in the effluent from Las Vegas. Between 50% and 90% of a pharmadeutical is not absorbed in the body. and is excreted instead. Many of these are very slow to degrade. All the more reason to go for nutritional prevention of disease whenever possible.
