Snoring can be an indicator of several situations,
ranging from nasal polyps to cardiovascular conditions.
An NPR feature on snoring several years ago really
pushed for more public and medical professional awareness.

I'd encourage him to see an MD or ENT who has kept up on the
professional literature about snoring and who will give
him a good check up!
