I wonder about it, but Hashimoto's thyroiditis is pretty well established as having a genetic component. Certainly dosing myself with high levels of iodine as a kid was not good. When my mom found me painting myself with those gorgeous fluorescent red lines, she put and end to it immediately. But not all the women in my family develop hypothyroidism, and there could be a number of factors in who does and who doesn't have symptoms. One aunt was on thyrodi medication for about twenty years and then was taken off medication. The use of iodine in childhood is something I'd include on a qeustionnarie if I were doing epidemiology on thyroid problems, just to see if there were any correlations.
