I'd have to add the documentation on ergot poisoning
which occured on rye kernels during damp weather
in northern Europe.
The ergot fungus produces an LSD type chemical
which the peasants didn't understand. People leapt
off buildings and were burned as witches since
everyone thought the phenomenon was a 'possession'
of the devil.

What exercises (not exorcises) me is that I don't want
to pre-evaluate individual situations and
jump to conclusions without evidence.

All in all you got us thinking about a lot of
socio-economic implications of diet and behavior.
