In Response To: Thyroid (Patti)
Patti, I had 9/10 of my thyroid removed 22 years ago due to Graves' Disease. As long as your TSH is normal, you have nothing to be concerned about. Be sure, however, that your doctor pays attention to your TSH level versus asking you how you feel in determining whether your Synthroid dosage is correct. I ran into problems whereby my doctors asked me how I was feeling rather than really paying attention to my TSH levels. I was seen by different doctors (my husband was in the Navy) and so consistency of care was not there. I ended up being mildly hyperthyroid for a number of years because they didn't pay enough attention to my TSH levels. I had been hyper for so long that I thought it was nornal, so when they asked me how I felt, I told them I felt fine, except that I seemed to be anxious a lot. They never put 2 and 2 together (this is common in military medicine). In my case, a civilian doctor finally caught it. I was amazed at how much better I felt once my Synthroid dose was lowered. Become smart about your condition. When your doctor tells you that your TSH level is normal, ask what your level is and what the normal range is. And pay attention to your body; it will tell you if something is amiss. Barbara H.
