donating blood to learn one's blood type

I friend who wanted to know his blood type tried to donate blood a few days ago. When asked why, he responded that he felt it was his civic duty and he wanted to know his blood type. They refused to take his blood!
Anybody have any ideas why this might be happening? best wishes, steve shapiro
