In the Atlanta Journal Consitution about a year ago, there appeared a very interesting article which was probably too provocative to get much media attention. Apparently, the Chinese Olympic Committee keeps a database on Olympic Events listing athletes, race and blood type. If an event is known to be over-endowed with type O Africans, the Chinese will not devote much training support or money to it. They just feel that it will be impossible for them to win.
This might be true in a sort of "blunt force" sort of way, but an A athlete can certainly hold their own if properly trained and conditioned. You just have to go about winning a little differently.
