Check out the site below www.richters.com. Richters is one of the biggest herb seed suppliers anywhere. They carry woad seed. It's easy to grow. The dye is made from the first year leaves. I expect the root you want is also first year, as is burdock, etc.
Caution: Groundhogs love it, so plant behind a good fence if you are in groundhog territory.
