I quit by using the nicotine gum, but a friend quit on her own. She said that exercise seemed to help her rid her body of nicotine faster. She jogged daily. She also had airpopped popcorn if she needed something. Instead of the patch, I think you can regulate the nicotine better by using the gum, can cut it into smaller pieces and use only as needed.
