I agree with the notion that we all need to become aware of just how much suffering is out there in the world, if nothing else to allow us to put our own misfortunes into a healthier perspective, though we can do much better than that.
Just reading the recent TIME articles on the AIDS epidemic in Africa was sobering and depressing. Currently 25-35 million infected, the African governments in denial, the population ostacizing AIDS sufferers (of course, women are held responsible, not men) and the West arguing about the economic costs of providing anti-viral drugs at an affordable price (at least to stop maternal-infant transmission, which is very doable).
Seems that one less Trident sub or Reagan-class carrier could provide the funds to protect the innocent.
