There is an Icelandic study which links a pedigree of breast cancer clusters with type A, but what remains to be seen is not percentage of occurance, but rather percentage of survivability. Certainly in our practice we've seen type O's and B's with breast cancer, but in general they are less receptor positive and present with fewer infected lymph nodes.

Being an A (A1 or A2 doesn't really matter here) is important because a lot of issues come into play:

1. The A antigen fits the receptor for epidermal growth factor, one of the growth factors found most commonly on breast cancer cells.

2. Blood group A has the lowest levels of circulating anti-Tn antibodies (these antibodies are in many ways the first line of surveilance against mutated cells)

3. Studies link changes in blood viscosity with cancer aggressiveness. It has been known since the 1950's that cancer cells often hitch rides on platelets. Separate studies link blood viscosity, type A and cancer. Interestingly, anxiety also produces significantly increased blood viscosity in type A, which may indicate that there is a 'type C personality' (cancer prone through worry) after all.

4. The Ligand-Like-Complex, LLC, which is the 'internal passport' used to allow cancers cells to exit from the regional lymph nodes, is 'A-like.' The Tn antigen and the breast cancer antigen CA15-3 are both 'M-like' and somewhat 'A-like.'

5. With regard to many of these factors, it is not as important to determine if you are A1 or A2 as much as it is to determine your MN status. Type A's with the MM blood group will have even more likelihood of their immune system being derailed by blood-group-like tumor antigens.

Bad news for type A? Not really. I wish I understood other disease succeptibilties in other blood groups as well.

What to do? Well, much of that is already figured out.

It's called the diet for blood type A.

So you're type NN: now what?
