In Response To: I'm disappointed at commercialization of this board (Cyrus)
About 4 months ago I raised the concern that there needed to be some way that this message board can begin to subsidize itself, as it uses by far the biggest chunk of server space and processor time on the site. It is worth noting that the BB's are used by only a small fraction of the total of number website visitors, and users are but a small fraction of NAP customer base. I suggested that perhaps a banner exchange program would be one way to do that. Many people responded that they felt uncomfortable, because with a banner exchange, you have no control over what particular banner is exchanged and hence displayed. Several posters suggested than instead of NAP exchanging banners, they would feel more comfortable with just NAP banners. Even though from NAP's perspective, this is not as good a business move -they are essentially preaching to the converted- as displaying their ads outside this website, we all went along.
All I asked of NAP was that the banners not be animated, and in general be subdued so as to allow anyone who felt like ignoring them the opportunity to do so.
Now, if you go to Dr. Koop's site, or Mayo.org, you will see tons of adds for pharmaceutical drugs. Perhaps, in fairness, someone can explain to me why there is no similar discussion going on over there.
You have ultimate control over your viewing experience. If you so wish, you can simply turn off the 'display graphics' feature of your browser (usually under 'Preferences' or 'Options' somewhere on your menu bar) read to you hearts content, then turn it back on when you surf on to someplace else.
