HRT and Breast Cancer risk
Posted By: Lynn
Just read in my newspaper yesterday that a new study was conducted and showed that women on hormone replacement therapy had an increased risk of 8% of getting breast cancer, that grew in chances the long the woman stayed on HRT. It said that those who do estrogen AND progestin and were on the lean side were the ones particularly at risk. So, if you were on this combination of HRT for 10 years, your risk increased 80%!!!! Pretty darned scary. Said this was a test of post menopausal women and that the increased incident of breast cancer did not affect women who were of heavier weight (whatever that means). I haven't looked on the web yet to see if it's reported somewhere there, but I'm sure it is. This article was in my local Ann Arbor News in Michigan.
I'm PRE menopausal and currently take estriol and progesterone for the past year, which has totally relieved my hot flash, night sweat and mood swing problems. I felt comfortable taking these even more when Dr. D's book said B's tend to do better on HRT without increased problems and the fact that I have no family history of breast cancer. I will be researching more to see if it might be prudent to explore another option.
