The best way to avoid the results of exposure to rhus toxidendron [poison oak/ poison ivy] is to flush the exposed area with a LOT of cold [ie tap] water ASAP.[hot water opens the pores and can increase the likelihood of problems]
It takes a little while for the irritant from the plant to bind with the oils on the skin. If it's removed before this occurs, NO problem! There is also a product called TECNU that will neutralize and remove the irritants anytime up to about 6[or is it 8?] hours after exposure. I no longer use it[it contains kerosene] as the cold water flush works so well. If you do not know you've been exposed, then good luck.[the tecnu supposedly will stop the spread if used properly, after rash develops]
