Fasting to "detox" - no, but...

Stephen, your arguments are good. Starving is often not a way to health, but to a worse state of sickness. I cannot fast more than one day, it makes me feel sick. Besides your arguments, the need for the B vitamins is undermined by starving. The B vitamins stores in the body run out within a week or sooner. Etc. Etc. This does not mean it did never heal anyone. It did. I read a few books about fasting patients who got rid of their sicknesses (including schizofrenia - starving the microorganisms in the brain to death). There are a few institutes who have some success in healing with fasting. The connection between your reasons why not to fast and their success is in your first point - it is unnatural when you are hungry. But there are sick people (and animals, too!) who lose their hunger for some time. Their body tells them to stop eating and flushes out what it needs to. I know a naturopathic MD here in Prague who told me he fasted for three weeks without any big problem, he felt better than before (but his fast was not total - he had some fruit juice every day). So, just as the world is not black and white, fasting may harm or heal, but I would not try it for any longer period. Karel
