Little-known facts from the history of modern medicine:
its inventor, Paracelsus, was a mercury mine worker with severe symptoms of mercury toxicity (dementia later in life; frequent outbursts of uncontrollable rage throughout life; the last one resulted in his getting killed in a bar brawl). Mercury was his medicine of choice. Most popular of the single-disease, single-remedy creations of his, calomel, was mercury chloride. Rapidly became popular due to its ability to suppress symptoms of syphilis, a major epidemic of the time. Side effects: severe deformities, in both users and the offspring, often incompatible with life. However, the doctors welcomed it because it was the first "treatment" ever to suppress symptoms on the spot. Became the single most widely used remedy of its time for all ailments, from syphilis to common cold. Some fifty years later, a celebrated German anatomist listed mercury as "a natural constituent of the human bones" because he had never seen human bones that didn't contain it in all of his career.
In case you've been wondering where the allopathic medicine originates and how we inherited this wonderful tradition.
