When patients come in at the end of the year,
their visits are always peppered with questions like “how can I lose 10 lbs?” or “My new year’s resolution is to be healthier, so what can I do?” I always tell them that cycles begin and end every day, and we place importance on New Year’s as a shift from one year to the next, but we have the chance to make changes in our lives every day.
Having said that, saying that we want to make changes is a lot easier than making the changes. I caution all my patients to take small steps that they can successfully achieve and which lead them to the bigger changes they are looking to make. By doing so, they can use the energy of success and accomplishment to fuel the next challenge.
|
For me personally, it is about exercise. My life schedule is so hectic that regular exercise always seems to get pushed to the side, and this year, I am determined to bring long lasting changes into my life that will not only help the “computer hunch” that is happening, but also be part of an overall healthy aging plan I am working on.
I figured I would start prior to New Year’s day to work out a program and
began to form new daily habits - I read somewhere that it takes 30 days to create
a new habit, and I am now on day 16! Four times a week, I ride a stationery bike,
and while doing so, I increase the resistance and distance. This is a great cardio
work out, and it is also getting me ready for my spring and summer biking excursions.
Every other day, I do a series of weights with increasing repetitions: 12 reps/rest/12 more reps. On alternating days, I increase the weight, careful to notice if I am pushing myself too far, and if so, I pull back a little bit. (Remember, I am doing this for the long haul, and don’t want to injure myself!).
The only thing missing in the routine is a stretching module, and that will happen after the first of the year. I am trying to plan my schedule to see if I can take a weekly yoga class that we offer to employees as part of our overall corporate commitment to well-being. If not, I’ll put together a 30-minute stretching segment that I can do on my own.
I feel good going into New Year’s. I’ve made some changes, and these will form the basis of my overall resolution for deepening my commitment to health and well-being and to combating stress in my life.
I’ll keep you posted on my progress! Good luck with mapping out your plans for the New Year. To healthy aging, flexibility and to creating new habits that we bring with us into the next decade!

Detoxification by Ginger Nash, ND, MIfHI
 |
When I began practicing naturopathic medicine
over 10 years ago I introduced many of my patients to the ideas of cleansing
and detoxification. Now in 2010, patients come into the office asking me
what they should do to detoxify their bodies. It has become common knowledge
that the world we live in is pollluted and that this has ill effects on
our health.
Many people are familiar with the idea of cleansing the bowels. Indeed this
is one important aspect of detoxification, as the health of the intestinal
tract is central to over all health. |
Colon hydrotherapy, or colonics, have
a strong place in the history of natural medicine. They have been used successfully
for many years to treat conditions of the digestive tract.
There is an entire
ecosystem in the gut made up of immune tissue and bacteria, some “bad” some “good.” Digestive diseases and diseases
of the immune system increase when this ecosystem becomes out of balance due
to poor dietary habits and exposure to toxins from the environment. I often refer
to this condition as “dysbiosis”. Toxins, just to name a few, include
pesticides, herbicides, PCBs and PVCs from plastics, hormones and residues of
pharmaceutical medicines in our water supply.
Toxins are likely to be stored in fatty tissues of the body. Recent research
has found that people who are even just 10 pounds overweight likely carry a toxic
load that is contributing to overall poor health.
In other words, eliminating toxins should be an integral part of any wellness
or weight loss program.
My recommendations for detoxification or cleansing include colonics, the use
of beneficial bacteria, or “probiotics” and specific homeopathic
medicines which will focus on the other major organs of elimination. Those organs
are the liver, kidneys, lungs and skin. One person’s weak spot may be the
lungs, another’s the skin and the homeopathics I employ will focus on one
or another of these organ systems.
A New Beginning: Dr. D'Adamo's Seven Day Detox Plan
(protocol courtesy of the Complete Blood Type Encyclopedia)
During the holidays, you’ve probably been eating and drinking too much,
and it’s likely that you’ve strayed into avoid territory on more
than one occasion. Now that the new year has begun, it’s a good time to
revive your body with a cleansing detoxification program.
For a generally healthy person, Dr. D’Adamo suggests a one week program
of whole, organic foods and supplements but does not recommend fasting. He believes
that, “Fasting is one way to detox your body, but probably not the best
way. I would only suggest fasting if you are under the guidance of a physician.”
Start by choosing only those foods that are considered beneficial and highly
beneficial for your type. If you need some menu guidance, refer back to your
Eat Right for Your Type, Live Right for Your Type, Cook Right for Your Type or
GenoType Diet books or the recipe database on www.dadamo.com. By eating beneficial
foods and taking supplements that are compatible with your blood type or GenoType,
you will be cleansing and detoxifying your body and allowing all the body’s systems
to function at their very best. Purchase organic when possible and stick to buying
whole foods, rather than processed foods from a box, bag or can.
Start the day with a tall glass of water with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice.
Continue drinking water throughout the day. Water helps with cell regeneration
and helps to cleanse the body. Aim to drink eight to ten glasses of water per
day.
Avoid being around harsh chemicals and steer clear of chemical cleansers – try
vinegar, lemon juice and baking soda instead (not only are they better for you,
they are better for the environment too).
Get some fresh air! Bundle up and go outside for a walk. You’ll get your
blood circulating, your muscles pumping and the clean, crisp air will revive
you.
As part of your detox protocol, Dr. D’Adamo recommends some herbal supplements
for each blood type. Each protocol is to be done for 7 consecutive days..

The Center for Personalized Nutrition™ Welcomes Colonic Hydrotherapy
Practitioner, Constance Jones
 |
Please join us in welcoming Connie Jones to the clinic staff! Connie
has been practicing since the early 1980’s, first owning her own
colon hydrotherapy practice in Boston, and then working at the Glastonbury
Naturopathic Center in Glastonbury, Connecticut, where she continues to
practice. Connie is also the founder and director of the New England School
of Colon Hydrotherapy.
|
Although she was aware of Dr. D’Adamo’s work,
it was not until she began working at the Glastonbury clinic that she really
took notice. Connie says that one of the doctors in Glastonbury recommended
Dr. D’Adamo’s protocols when working with his patients. Impressed by the results, she decided to see Dr. D’Adamo
herself and says that following the Blood Type and GenoType™ program
has helped her immensely.
Connie is looking forward to joining the staff at the Center for Personalized
Nutrition™ and says, “I am delighted to have the opportunity to work
with him directly and to keep on learning and refining my understanding about
what I can do to complement his work. I have witnessed how effective his protocol
is, especially with people who have digestive issues.”
Colon Hydrotherapy cleanses the colon through safe, gentle infusions of warm,
filtered water into and out of the rectum and large intestine using no chemicals
or drugs. Her technique uses hygienic and comfortable, disposable equipment with
multi-filtered, purified water within a closed, FDA-registered system. From a
naturopathic perspective, cleansing the colon may be valuable in minimizing the
effects of dietary and environmental stresses as well as the impact on the immune
system of toxins regularly bombarding us. During colon hydrotherapy, we believe
that the body eliminates toxins, so you become more able to fight disease, in
addition to your feeling more relaxed.
Please call the clinic if you are interested in scheduling an appointment with
Connie. |
