General consensus on 23andme? *   (reply) Posted by: Dr. D
Date Posted: Saturday, January 14, 2017, 11:31am
There is no problem with Genos data, other than the sheer size. However, except for isolated instances, more is generally only more. This is due to the knowledge gap between what can be discovered and what is known. Reporting a new SNP is not difficult; it simply requires some patience and the necessary technology. Being able to draw some sort of meaningful conclusion from the SNP is a much, much bigger deal. Now you have to do the epidemiological work, which is   involved, complicated and expensive. For example, 23andme reports about 700,000 snps. Of these, we know 'something' about around 7,000, while we are able to draw actionable conclusions on closer to 3000 - 4000.

Of the rest? Black hole.  Granted, tho...

2017 updates change our swami?   (reply) Posted by: Dr. D

The T5 values are the same data as the starting values for SWAMI. While they do not change in T5, in SWAMI they can change quite dramatically.

A more transparent SWAMI ?*   (reply) Posted by: Dr. D

There can be up to  300 algorithms/valuations in SWAMI that are applied to a food before it receives its final value.

There are 600+ foods in SWAMI.

A more transparent SWAMI ?*   (reply) Posted by: Dr. D
Date Posted: Monday, December 26, 2016, 10:19am
1. If at the end of using SWAMI you feel it is a rip-off, then contact customer service and they will happily refund your money.

2. Having written a LOT of software, one trend tends to repeatedly surface. Typically the better the software gets, the more features the users seem to feel are needed. Most of these features are then used by one or two people, a few times, usually after I've spent hours and days coding the feature.

3. SWAMI is designed to generate one-of-a-kind diets based on the principles I've developed over the years. Nowhere in the product description does it say that it also provides a full medical/biochemical education as well. The professional program has more controls than XP, and a lot of the time,...

Autographed copy of the newly updated ER4YT book *   (reply) Posted by: Dr. D
Date Posted: Friday, December 2, 2016, 5:03pm
I'm told the price on the NAP store was a mistake. The sale price is $19 something. All copies from NAP are autographed for the first month.

NAP can't compete with amazon nor match their price. And books are expensive to ship.  So if you feel amazon is your best bet, then feel free.

However, you may want to ask yourself the question, other than selling you the book for a few dollars less, how will amazon be supporting this work? Will they be paying for this board, its moderators, and maintenance? Does it produce monthly helpful newsletters for BTD followers?  Will they be supporting the training of future physicians in these methods? Or underwriting patient care at the COE for needy, underprivileged...

Scientific Proof *   (reply) Posted by: Dr. D
Date Posted: Thursday, August 11, 2016, 9:35pm
All good points, and thank you.

I suppose my problem is that I'm not terribly focused on 'proving' the theory/ system as a major goal at this point in my life.

In many ways my attention is on writing genomic and microbiome software for clinicians and continuing to explore generative technologies.

However, I would not be surprised if one of my ducklings goes ahead and does studies of this nature.

Double blind controlled studies are well suited to unitary agents (give drug plus placebo, check for effects.)
Nutritional research is virtually impossible to do with this design.

Statistical power needed to 'prove' that salt intake is correlated with blood pressure: minimum 165,000 subjects / 3-5 years.

Imagine what would be required to 'prove' via this current standard of proof four ABO diets, comprising over 600 foods.
BTW over 25% of all pharmaceuticals lack this type of proof.

MTHFR C677T (T;T) Warrior*   (reply) Posted by: Dr. D
Date Posted: Monday, June 6, 2016, 7:01pm
DOS,

Both SNPs are needed to calculate MTHFR activity, as the different combination of heterozygous and homozygous outcomes can results in anywhere from 30-40% to 100% enzyme activity. Some people also have mutations that can result in 'methyl trapping' in which case too aggressive early use  of  MTHFR support supps. See here:

http://datapunk.net/opus23blog/2016/02/20/dont-fall-into-the-methyl-trap/

MTHFR does exert effects on histamine due to its interactions with COMT and histamine methyltransferase (HNMT).

Food intolerance test different from btd*   (reply) Posted by: Dr. D
Date Posted: Friday, June 3, 2016, 11:46am
I don't doubt that food allergies exist. However, there exists a spectrum of significance, from anaphylaxis to very, very, slight symptoms. What I do have a problem with (which was what was indicated in the early books) was the over-tendency to many docs to attribute symptoms to food allergy when the evidence suggests that other aspects might be the cause. Over-sensitive immune systems can have allergic reactions to foods and foods can induce over-sensitive immune systems. Perhaps more to the point, testing is noisy at best; even the best food allergy panels have very high false positive rates and may not in fact pick up significant allergic foods. There are a myriad of reasons for this, including antigenic cross-reactivity (i.e antibody to...

SWAMI and OPUS 23*   (reply) Posted by: Dr. D
Date Posted: Friday, June 3, 2016, 11:25am
Because 23andme is offered as a consumer-level testing service, they cannot provide clinical or diagnostic information. They can tell you whether you have a unibrow or if you have soft ear wax, but they cannot tell you about functional impairments or disease probabilities. However the raw data that they supply can be used by other clinical programs to make these determinations.  Opus allows the physician to build dietary and supplement suggestions from a variety of sources. Lacking genotype information it will use ABO and secretor, if the physician desires. If the physician has a SWAMI file for that client, it will grab the SWAMI values and use those as the starting point for its subsequent calculations.

Now, I understand there is lot of skepticism towards all this, concern that this isn't "scientific", talk about all this being discredited as a hoax, etc.

That's indeed true, but it is also true of virtually every diet theory out there.  It's part of the nature of the dog-eat-dog world of competing diet theories.

Perhaps the reason you see more of it with the BTD is because it more or less relegates the major diet theories to one of the subsets of the BTD, pretty much insuring animosity from all involved. Another reason is that, to those self-assured, yet ignorant, critics,  it seems so preposterous on the surface.

DNA test results, carb tolerance and blood type*   (reply) Posted by: Dr. D

We've looked at this for a program that I am currently coding (Opus 23); the single SNP is not terribly predictive. However when combined into an algorithm that examines the permutations of the haplotype that contains the GIP gene SNP, plus two SNPs from PPARG and one each from ADRB2, and ADRB3, it becomes very useful.

Quoted from Patty H
However, as I understand it, secretor status, regardless of blood type, moderates the amount of IAP.

Secretor status +  ABO type.
Of the two ABO is more significant, since (obviously) it controls what gets secreted.

Foods to be added to SWAMI (Discussion of List)   (reply) Posted by: Dr. D
Date Posted: Saturday, April 4, 2015, 11:45am
The problem is more complex than just calculating a SWAMI or BTD value. The food also has to have a micronutrient entry in the USDA Food Nutrient Database. This is what SWAMI uses to calculate antioxidant, vitamin and mineral values for the food.

One thing I've often wondered about is why the SWAMI pro spits out a "genotype label" at all. It seems to cause more confusion than clarity, as the SWAMI diet is going to differ (often widely) from the "book diet" with the same name.

SWAMI 'begins' from one of the basic genotypes. From there on, things get shuffled and reshuffled.

When you get that far, it's best to not get too hung up on the labels.  The pro version has a lot of knobs and dials: about 50% of them are particular to the person, not their classification. Have pity the poor software. If it could do the job most people wish it could, it would need 12 million labels to choose from.  Depending on how those knobs and dials get tweaked the program does its best to correlate the 'person specifics' with the best 'classification group'.
