In my SWAMI Bok Choy and Pak Choy are benefitail while cabbage is an avoid. Bok Choy is called Chinese Cabbage but also by the scientific name Brassica rapa. European Cabbage is known by the scientific name Brassica oleracea -

Now  on to my dilemma of classification. Napa Cabbage looks very similar to regular (European) cabbage - however it is a form of Brassica rapa!!!

However, my SWAMI is silent about Napa Cabbage. Should I count it as Bok Choy?

The twisted nature of this - they assign it a subspecisis title - Napa Cabbage is Brassica rapa pekinensis while Bok Choy is Brassica Rapa chinensis:   :-/

I am hoping that the subspecies tag means that they are not radically different (different appearance but not chemistry) so that I can call both of them Brassica Rapa and eat them as beneficial vegetables. Anybody know the answer?

I actually did do a search, but nobody seemed to have a true yes or no answer. Can anybody answer decisively, Y or N?

I can't answer decisively, but I would use the Bok Choy (Brassica Rapa) rating for the Napa Cabbage - or at least a Neutral rating at least until I tested to determine if I had any negative effects from it...

Of course not.

Unrated foods are neutrals.

If it is for all intents and purposes the same as a rated food, use the rated food (e.g. 1% milk v. 2% milk)


If find they are definitively close enough to something else by the best available information, you might lean towards that rating.


In general I prefer to look to see if there are reasons to consider an unrated food an avoid and otherwise use as a neutral. You might choose a different path.
