i've just checked "onion"

it seems that it has a moderate glycemic index...!!??!!
i thought instead that onions have a very low GI, actually i've seen on many books about that and i could be pretty sure but now.........i don't know.

what do you think?

no worries as long as you stick to the frequency values given in your book

I would agree with the above post by Lola that GI values are not going to be a problem on the BTD or derived diets. However if you are being extra vigilant because you feel you are a diabetic risk or have Diabetes in your family here is a site that has fast reference values.

Glycemic Index values

It gives Onions as 10, which is pretty low. The original site on this material is

though they use a search format which is nowhere near as convenient.

Way, way back when Weight Watchers first started they prohibited use of fresh onions - and several other veggies that contain any significant amount of natural sugar.  The recipes called for onion powder or dry onion flakes.  They were not very tasty.

Over the years the folks at Weight Watchers learned a few things about veggies.

Dr. D knows WAY more than a few things.  I follow what he says.

Onions are high in fructose, people following low fructose FODMAPs diets don't eat them. but as Dr D knows they have other benefits.

hi Lola,
yes, actually i do think about swami but, i'll tell you, i've seen that it implies to take a lot of "body measurements" and i'm not so good at it, i mean maybe it's too complicated for me ??) ??) ??) ??) ??)
but, i've just received the book LR4YT and it is utterly gorgeous: so far i've managed with ER4YT and it was....well, a praiseworthy starting point but this one is the key for everyone who is non-secretor as i am.

you know what? i've checked that eating raw onion is a good stuff for me, otherwise it's a nightmare for my digestion, so i'm following Adam's suggestion on another thread (maybe "bowels are worse"...i don't remember, sorry :-/) ,anyway he adds raw onions with other vegetables as well in the salads......well i must say i can't thank him enough for that ;D ;D

though i wondered were i could compare the other foods (following Dr D values, maybe a GI list food or something like that), do you know it?it is not in the book either.

There is a difference b/t cooked onion and raw in terms of "sugar" content.

I generally cook onions with some sort of oil. That lowers the GI of the meal, plus I usually eat veggies WITH some sort of protein, which also reduces the GI of the overall meal.

I've found that I've never had a problem with blood sugar from my diamond veggies, of which onions are one.
