Can I use sperm instead of saliva for secretor test?  :P

I have some bleeding gums...

Sorry to be too provocative ...

But if you are a non-secretor you should have no blood type antigens in your saliva, and none on your sperm. If I have some bleeding gums, my saliva test will be a false positive. So I need to use something besides saliva - which leaves sperm as a possible alternative.

However, I need to know two things about the saliva test. The first is if somehow the test can work with anything besides saliva. I think it should work with any substance that has the possibility of blood-type antigens in it. But I do not know.

Secondly, I do not know if non-secretors have blood type antigens in semen, but NOT the sperm. Stated another way, there is sperm and there is semen. They are not the same thing. Does the semen of a non-secretor have any blood products in it (besides the sperm) that would normally have a blood type antigen?  You see, I don't know that either.

:P ;D So what should I send on that sterile swab?  :B :P ;D ::)

Might want to explore the blood test. Don't think you can transport semen in the mail.

You might want to work on whatever is causing the gum bleeding. Just a thought.  :)

have it done at a blood donor center or at a reference lab that also has a blood bank.

Check to see if the blood center will do it. The last time I gave blood, they said they couldn't do it.

Just do the lewis blood test. you can buy it from nap, it's not expensive and while you are at it do the MN test too. you can use the same blood sample.

It's a good question, and not "provocative" in this context. In theory, other body fluids "should work" for the secretor test, but in practice, the tests are only designed to be used with saliva. Semen is quite a bit thicker than saliva, and as you mentioned there's the issue of filtering out the sperm- the lab simply isn't set up to work with semen samples at this time.

Your best bet is to get a Lewis Antigen blood test, which can be used indirectly to determine secretor status. You may be able to confirm the results with a saliva test in the future, after your gums have healed.

Really, why not? It's such an important test, I can do secreter, a1,2,3 and MN all in one go.

We do not mail put blood in the mail, and DPN does not do blood tests here only saliva-- you would need a doctors order to have blood drawn.

May the spirits Help America,

can you get the tests done in Mexico?

You can possibly get the test done by your doctor, but DPN won't do the blood tests in CT.

Ruthie they do them in Conn but you have to be a patient. They have a lab in the office.
