BTD Forums  /  Supp Right For Your Type  /  What does Trehalose do?

Hello!

I bought some Trehalose (100% trehalose from Swanson Vitamins) and I have been using it for the last two days to flavor bitter drinks. I am consuming about a dozen teaspoons of it daily. What is it supposed to do?

I like it. Tastes ok. What am I doing to myself?

I don't know about another brand of Trehalose but I hope you are using the recommended dosage that this one says.  It seems excessive.

Dr. D'Adamo's Trehalose Complex helps clear protein build up and aid cellular repair.

so on Dr. D's Trehalose , it says to take 1 level tsp twice daily in warm water with lemon.  Anyone know what the lemon does?  Can I just take it with warm water?

Also 1 level tsp.. is that a dinner tsp or an actual measuring tsp?

thanks much!

it says it's for brain and nerve health.  Protein build up??? Never heard that before.   ??)

The lemon helps the body rid itself of waste.

To make sure you are dosing properly, you need to use an accurate measure.  If this requires you to use measuring spoon, so be it.

All cells make protein components as part of the growing / splitting cycle.  There are times when the components are not made properly (called mis-folded proteins).  Trehalose stimulates the cells to break these mis-folded proteins back into components to be reused to make correct products as needed by the cells.

I assume you are asking what is my experience with this supplement...  I take some once in a while, but I have so much ongoing detox that too much is overkill for me.  I have more trouble keeping the liver functioning well, so continue to stress food and supplements that support the liver system and the kidneys.

This supp does not interact with amino acid supp's like Tyrosine does it?  I've had a headache behind my right eye and nausea since starting it but I'm not sure if it's related or not.

not having read the answers.. I have never taken it plain only with d-ribose added from Dr D.. It is the 'complex' combo that works to cheer me up, while it also allows the sugar as a substitute way more healthy than any other for diabetics.. If you have no ill effects from the poder as a plain sugar I do not see why you would go back to regular sugar..it will clean up the body of debree..

But for the effect of making me happy, I needed the combo..

there was a thread with many about the combo things.. and feeling, You however might be the first to use it as a sugar.. good luck and please report to us what it does for you.. where did you buy it for how much?

What would be a typical side effect from taking too much TC?   A toxic feeling?

For me it was more like an anxiety attack.  I either had to get moving or suffer the consequences.  At first, I kinda liked it.  But, after a while, I didn't care for that "up up and away" feeling it gave me.  I'm more of a Cortiguard or Tranquility Base type of person.  Something that will mellow me out.

I'm with you on the need to feel mellowed out.  Maybe you took too much too quickly.

What amount did you start with?   And did you ever increase that initial dose?  Curious how long after beginning TC did you start having issues and whether it was due to taking a higher dose at some point or not.

I started with 1/2 teaspoon and worked it up from there.  Initially, it was like the famous thread title "This is definitely Wow!"  I got used to it over time as my body adapted to it.  But, honestly, I was wondering what this concentrated substance was really doing to me.  Yes, I know the mantra "Trust Dr D", but still I was just unsure about it.  Also, timing it so that you don't have it with caffeine, etc. was an issue with me.  I think maybe when I retire, I might try it again and have it mid-morning during some exercise, so I can then time it right and then burn off all the energy.  Right now, though, I have to sit at a desk 8 hours a day, and my exercise is two 15-minute breaks a day (morning and afternoon) to walk through the building.  And that's enough for my type and the amount of weight I'm currently carrying around.

Maybe your body was happy on 1/2 tsp of TC and taking more was too much for your
current activity level.    My DH is a Warrior too.  Having read about a Warrior's predisposition for specific diseases on this website and in the GTD book, I know that they have health issues related to rapid aging. Trehalose increases autophagy and.....

Quote from Dr. D  "Slower aging is also associated with increased autophagy."

So if you were questioning if trehalose was helpful for you....you're currently 50 and a Warrior....time to start slowing down your aging process  :)

I know what you're saying, but, still... isn't the SWAMI and it's current supplement recommendations what I'm supposed to follow?  Trehalose Complex is not mentioned in my SWAMI supplement recommendations.

TC is not mentioned in my husband's SWAMI either.  There are basic supplement recommendations that SWAMI gives us all but they're generally very basic.  The speciality
supplements, depending on the updates of SWAMI, TC might not have been put into the system nor might it ever be.  All I know is that Warriors age rapidly and that all Warriors could benefit
from increasing autophagy.....and if your instinct was to initially try it, I'm thinking it's far easier at age 50 to slow down aging than at 70.

I think you might want to read this if you haven't already done so.  It might convince you to
go back and keep taking that 1/2 tsp of TC.

beneficial for a Warrior.

Yes.  When I take too much, I feel great for about 2 days then crash really hard due to the immense toxin flush.  I haven't found a way to supplement enough to keep the filtration systems functioning through the "big dump".

Hi Adam, in order to have TC somewhere during working hours you would need to find "a break from coffee" for 2 hours and a 1/4, 1 hour before and after, plus 15 minutes to enjoy the drink.

I drink 1 cup of coffee at 6:00am.  I drink 1 cup of green tea at 12:00pm.  This is the only caffeine I drink.

I might be able to sprinkle some TC on my grapefruit which I consume a little at a time during the morning from about 8:00am to 11:00am.  But, considering the number of supplements I'm now consuming, I just don't want to add another one right now.

I'm also in the same boat as ABJoe.  Too many toxins built up.  Carrying a lot of weight.  Take a look at James Gandolfini (a classic "bear" Warrior) during his last film.  I look just about as bad as that.  I'm 6'1" and just recently topped out at 260 lbs.

I'm just now one month into SWAMI compliance after feasting during the holidays.  I'm in a really good routine now and want to keep it that way.  Keeping it completely on the left-hand-side and watching my portions.  Have gone from 260 to now 247 in a little over a month.  Don't even feel hungry.  I have 3 oz. of wild salmon every morning.  Great start to the day.  My body heat is now regulating a lot better (was very cold there for a while) and have more natural energy and feel very centered just from following my SWAMI and its supplement recommendations.  Also I'm following the skin and cardiovascular protocols.

Exactly what happened to me.  Was waiting for someone to describe this type of reaction....thanks! I'm getting a tiny amount of trehalose in my membrosia complex powder....so this is about all I seem to tolerate right now.

The same thing happened when I first used D-Ribose alone.  I had to reduce my dose down to a pinch once a day, but at that time, I needed to repower the body as I.  Now the body is normally detoxing/healing at a high rate, and the Trehalose Complex stimulates overdrive and I just can't take it.

I will be extremely happy when I get all of the toxins out of the lyphomas...  I irritated some lyphomas under my left shoulder blade and between the bottom two ribs on each side yesterday, so I'm having immense pain with each breath (or arm movement) today and probably for the next two or three...

It seemed like TC upset my Lyme toxins that might have been deeply buried and somehow were
disturbed by promoting a rapid deep cleansing...  Every symptom I had when I first got Lyme disease resurfaced....swollen knee...stiff neck....too much cleansing to deal with. Makes me realize how
powerful a supplement TC really is.....and difficult it is for some to process a lot of toxicity at once.

My first couple of months on Trehalose, I had a tremendous amount of elimination via my skin.  Not the normal sort of bumps, either, more like scales that were itchy, then red and sensitive, then dried up and fell off.  Now, many months along, my skin has become very clear and glowing.  I still only take 1/2 tsp/day.

Maybe 1/2 tsp does the job just as well as taking more.

Trehalose helped me sleep like a baby right off the bat - even taking it at bedtime. Now, Yerba Mate' is a different story altogether for me. I got some of that stuff when I was on the GENO diet where it was allowed, and one small drink of it nearly sent me into a panic attack. 'Way too much "excitement" for me!  :o  Trehalose is really good for sprinkling over or putting into things we want to freeze  too. If I freeze bananas, I give them a good sprinkling of TC. Also, add it to my version of "cornbread," and other baked items when I plan to freeze them.

This "cornbread" has no corn in it! It is made with millet, amaranth, chia and almond meal. I love it! And the TC simply enhances the deliciousness! I used Dr. D.'s TC. With the help of various experienced cooks on the forum I have been very happy to develop a "cornbread" that is a wonderful substitute for the real thing! Sometimes I just have a muffin for a snack!

Are you drinking plenty of water?  Your body may be breaking down stuff and need the extra water to flush it out.  Otherwise, the broken down toxins are just hanging around in your system and giving you the tummy and head aches.

Follow Adam's suggestion to drink more water, but if it doesn't help adequately - Cut the dose in half and see if the symptoms are better.  The idea is to have the symptoms manageable while still being able to notice when they get better.  When they get to hardly noticeable, it'll be time to increase the dose some - still keeping symptoms at a tolerable level...

Hope this helps...

No, I haven't, ABJoe. But I guess it would be worthwhile to take the time to do it. I would have been delighted to use someone else's recipe without taking months to get it just the way I like it! Not too sweet but just right. I didn't grow up eating sweetened, authentic cornbread because the corn always seemed sweet enough to us. This "cornbread" needs a little sweetener, though, to really come alive -  about one-fourth cup of agave/honey mixed and 2 teaspoons TC in 24 muffins. If I were using plain trehalose, I would use more of it and less agave/honey. I LOVE garlic in cornbread so I add 1/2 teaspoon of that.

Maybe your body is telling you something. Try it that way and see what happens. I CANNOT deal with lemon or grapefruit aside from what is already in the TC so I simply take it with the larch.

I think i'm going to pull off of it and see if I can level out again...

The following are questions to stimulate self-analysis - you can think about them to draw conclusions or answer them if you want additional help...

Have you had anxiety attacks in the past?
Did you take some medication for them?

If the answer to the above questions is "Yes", it is quite possible that the Trehalose is helping clean out medication or some emotional "junk" related to these which is yielding some unpleasant reactions.

There are obviously other possible explanations as well.

Hi,

What trehalose are you taking? Dr. D's Trehalose Complex is trehalose combined with d-ribose and modified citrus pectin, which may make all the difference.

Secondly, before quitting, have you tried reducing to once daily (morning)?

Last and most important, for anxiety attacks adaptogens are in order. Dr. D wrote about this in Personalized Living in November.
http://northamericanpharmacal.com/living/2013/11/dr-dadamo-on-holidays-and-stress/

An excellent adaptogen for O is Catechol (Rhodiola)
http://northamericanpharmacal.com/living/2013/08/rhodiola-a-powerful-adaptogen/

Another fantastic one is Histona Ulterior
http://www.4yourtype.com/prodinfo.asp?number=NP061
I take one with breakfast. I loved it from the first moment, it has always made me feel so good! and I didn't even pay attention that it was intended for stress relief! (happy_gangsta)

Another adaptogen I take when I feel unquiet is Super Adaptogen by Dragon Herbs, which contains 15 herbs incl rhodiola. It calms me down beautifully.

Please take good care!!! all the best  :) :K)

I don't notice any effects of TC good or bad.  I do enjoy it on ruby grapefruit slices so I use it because it may slow my aging & that can only be a good thing!
I am going to start adding some to my type O explorer husband's morning smoothies, chances are he will probably react, will do it on the weekend just in case.
