So due to the Pacific Ocean problems, I've been ordering our sea vegetables from Maine Coast Sea Vegetables and instead of Wakame, they sell Alaria Esculenta which is apparently so similar to Japanese wakame (Undaria pinatifida) that they refer to it as "Wild Atlantic Wakame."

Would this be ok to use this instead of actual Wakame?  Wakame is a diamond on our Swami lists.  

Also their Kelp is Saccharina latissima (formerly known as Laminaria longicruris), also known as "Wild Atlantic Kombu," because of its similarity to Japanese Kombu. Kelp (L. longicruris).  

So same question.. here.. would it be ok to use this instead of actual Kelp?

I've been getting a lot of Iodine lately from my new fascination with Sea Vegetables but according to Dr. David Brownstein - who wrote 'Idodine, Why You Need It," you excrete what you don't need.  so I'm not too worried.  Plus I might be sweating out quite a bit in my saunas.   :P

Thank you Lola!  Do you eat sea vegetables?

For some reason my husband is only allowed Spiralina and Wakame.  The only thing on his Swami that is checked is digestive issues, and family heart and cancer issues.  

I have checked those same things to but I am free to eat Kelp and Kombu as well.  I wish he could.. it makes cooking hard for me because I used to love to put the Kombu in the soups.

He's a Hunter like me so it must be something in his measurements that causes Kombu and Kelp to be an avoid!  

thoughts?

Research I have done into Iodine indicate that Thyroid hormone seems to be its only use to the body and that it is not stored and that any excess is excreted.

Oddly I have seen references advising against using I supplements though never accompanied by any specific rationale. Whether much research has ever been done on the topic is unknown to me but a caution against supplementation does seem inappropriate under the circumstances. ??) This is especially so when you consider that (in the US) Iodized salt is available but not required. Personal choice? ??)

I used to think that as well but sources I have read indicate it used by the ovaries, breasts, stomach salivary glands, skin and others. I believe the thyroid takes what it needs first and the rest goes to the other organs. If there is a dietary shortage then the thyroid will be deficient or possibly get just enough but then all the glands will be deficient.

Thanks for the links. I have not done any extensive research into this as it was more out of curiosity than any pressing need. It would be surprising that it would be a 'one use' item as so many vitamins, minerals etc. are big players, serving many uses in many different parts of the body. However the sources I checked jumped full tilt into Thyroid and never mentioned any other functions. Thanks again for pointing this out. ;D
