My daughter seems to be getting migraines right before her period starts and I want to help her.

Would the Fem Balance and/or Aromastat be a good solution?

I would imagine there would be alternative you might like to consider first. like addressing the cause food or environment?

are there any other symptoms?

how about a Epsom salts bath. start with one cup warm biath 15 mintes biuld to 2  cups 20 min

reduce dairy products.

reduce wheat

reduce sugar

look out for preservatives, sulphites, nitrates etc.

a glass of water.

also is she a O or an A and how compliant? perhaps check her MN status.

She throws up during the migraines most of the time.

She is an A, but my wife will not let me have her eat like an A should.
Hopefully now that she is becoming more self conscious, she will do it on her own and then my wife will lose her say.

Oh Tom that's horrible! I don't know what you mean by "will not let me have her eat like an A". I would think in a positive environment, family members could simply put the bowls of food on the table and let everyone eat as their conscience dictates. In my mind its only a beast that advocates opposite of what the child should be eating for preventative health, stemming from vanity or some other kind of inner embarassment. "Mother knows best" simply doesn't hold that much sway as it did a few decades ago.

I once had a spouse that didn't even want me to help myself to get better and I am finally away from that spouse. Yes continue to educate your daughter and let your daughter read the testimonials regularly from women here. I know I finally got rid of migranes once I had stuck with compliancy :)

We eliminated the throwing up at the same time by eliminating tomato stuffs, even odor, from her environment.

2 months ago, I got Bromelain, Boswellia, and Magnesium capsules to try to solve the problem and the combination has helped tremendously.

Tom, I talked over your question with my daughter, who is an Acupuncturist.  Your daughter's symptoms are a classic description of 'Liver Qi Stagnation', which is a common complaint around hormonal cycles - whether PMS related, or menopausal.

The most widely recommended formula for this is Xaio Yao Wan.  Plum Flower is a safe company that sells chinese herbal formulas in all good natural food stores.

Or if you want a better quality of herbs, you can buy from Dragonherbs via their website, under the name of Bupleurum and Dong Quai.  There may be other good companies who carry this formula, but I am just especially familiar with those.

buy her a bottle of deflect

tell her to have one before meals, for starts

polyflora might not be such a bad idea either

begin by healing her gut and helping her ecosystem get into balance

the formula in fem balance is appropriate for all

If she eats more like an A the possible liver/gallbladder problem wouldn't be such a problem.

Perhaps everyone in the house needs to be more positive and supportive and calm.

taking her for long gentle walks, encouraging A behaviour without actually calling that may be the way to approach it.

i assume you wife is blood type A too maybe the whole family should go for a long walk in the country.

and perhaps a run for you on your own ;)

and buy them both some ancient minerals bath salts or Epsom bath salts, without mentioning it's magnesium ;)

would merely go for a higher amount of mg,fish oil and B-vits as B-complex.....;)...
and then have a look for Migraine treatments in the protocols and or also Dr. Michael Murray and Pizzornos' work *Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine*... great advices there as well :D...

Sleeping on valerian root and passionflower always worked for my migraines. Seemed to be triggered by a number of things, but restoring proper chi flow was the solution. I would feel a weird internal pressure and a constricted aura during attacks, like it was necessary to get my energies to flow outward.

I'm definitely thinking she's low on magnesium, and possibly has other mineral imbalances as well. HTMA (hair tissue mineral analysis) can help you pinpoint exactly what's going on with her body, and eliminate a lot of the guessing games.

she's still young and periods are not something her system will be used to. her hormones are probably a mess. you might think about getting her chasteberry as a tea or supplement to help her balance her system. you might also see if you can get her into tie chi. it is a very relaxing way to balance energy and strengthen core muscles which might ease some of her pms.

Here are some acupressure points that will help.

The title says Cramps, PMS, etc. but it should work because the migraines come before her periods.  I know these work.  I had a friend do them on herself and she got a lot of relief.

I would do points A, B, C, D, E, G, H in the picture.

She should start them a few days before her period, every day for a few days, maybe 7 or 8 days, as she sees fit.

As well as Type A diet ,if possible, I agree with Lola & Amazone ..heal the gut with probiotics/Deflect..also Mag.B Vits...and a blend of omega 3 with borage/starflower oil

wishing your daughter all the best & hope she is improving soon...such a terrible time for her when growing up itself is difficult enough to deal with.

would look at introducing Floradix liquid tonic into her diet.

I agree with the above, esp the TCM theory of liver qi stagnation, I so wish I was aware of all this, after suffering migraines for much of my life, and as a teen, missed school due to severe menstrual cramps.  I also took loads of prescribed meds for migraine up until about 5 yrs ago.
It may well be a comination of nutrition, lifestyle, exercise, relaxation, stress-management to get results.
Also the emotions of anger, resentment, frustration affect the energy within the liver - so can be helpful to address this - many teens are not taught about how to deal with their emotions and suppressing emotions can affect the health just as much as the wrong foods.  This liver qi issue is TCM philosophy and won't show up on a standad medical test, most modern western doctors unless they have an interest in TCM, won't understand.
So, the energy needs to flow effortlessly through all organs/meridians for good health, and all the five elements need balance.  If I remember, the 'wood element' is connected with the liver.  So, green veggies very important, maybe olive oil, enough proteins to keep blood sugar stable, regular routine if possible, some fresh air/deep breathing/sun-shine just as the tree outside needs to grow strong - strong 'wood element'.  and decrease the things which I feel weekened my own liver, ie the dairy foods, sugars/sweetners, candy, excess fruits.    Some fruit ok.... many Chinese don't eat huge amounts of fruit, some books suggest a little cooked fruit, esp in cold seasons.  Keep the liver energy flowing, and things should improve.
A nice warm herbal tea to support the liver is good, ie milk thistle, dandelion root, or as mentioned above, TCM herbal pills/tablets.  ...green tea......In the long run, I have a feeling it is about getting all things into balance - physical, emotional/mental/spiritual elements of living, not just a type A diet.
Soups & warm cooked rice dishes (rice and walnuts), round grain rice and chives or spring onions), a big feature in TCM food as therapy chapters, to strengthen yin and build strong blood.  I wish I ate more veggies when younger, this is vital (I feel).  lemon juice in warm water first thing in morning helps me, and also sometimes on fish/veg in the evening.

She is taking Exakta. That should help with any iron issues.

Until my wife gets on board with making sure our daughter eats like an A, it's going to be difficult to get her gut in order.

Best of luck with supplements, I still think until all aspects are in balance, in terms of daily habits/routine, lifestyle, emotional/spiritual issues, right type of food that nourishes all five elements and re-balances the doshas(subtle energies), that improvement is often temporary. I found TCM philosophy and Ayurveda very helpful myself.
Wholistic approach for the long-term is good.
Elimination (bowel habits) can also suffer is the wood element is out of balance, and if so, then nutrients may not always be assimilated well, which is why supplements rarely helped me.
Also, migraine tea is great to have on hand for acute migraine attacks, I bought some from India - http://www.jiva.com  -  but one could find herbs locally, and use spices (ginger, cinnamon) in daily cooking. Hope she improves soon.
