I am having allergy symptoms that i haven't had since before starting the BTD over 10 years ago.  I have been indulging in avoids  :o but no more than i have in the past and i never got these symptoms before when i did.

I'm wondering if eating avoids can cause the same symptoms as environmental allergies do?.  I'm experiencing a stuffy/sniffly nose and irritated eyes, these symptoms resemble the same symptoms i used to get when i had seasonal allergies.  I have been waking up with a congested nose for a couple of months now, the sniffling and eye irritation just started today.

Thanks!  ;)

I get those symptoms when I’m exposed to corn.    When there are small hidden ingredients that contain corn or have HFCS then I get a little stuffy for 3 days.  When I ingest something that was thickened with corn starch, my symptoms are much worse.

When I was touring a printing plant, my nose suddenly started running like a faucet.  I was asking “anybody got anything, a paper towel, whatever”.  It turned out they put corn starch between the papers to keep it dry.  My throat became sore.  It then backed up into my ears which caused me to have a fever.  I was on a business trip to the DC HQ and this was a side trip to a warehouse in MD.  It is not fun to fly home stuffed up like that. :-/

Red Lilac,

You bring up a good point about the corn starch.  I was Christmas shopping yesterday so i'm wondering if i was exposed to something in the air.  I have to stay out of highly scented stores like candle shops because my eyes usually start to act up almost as soon as i walk in.  Now that i think about it  :o i was in a bath and body shop smelling shower gels, maybe that set if off?.  If i didn't know any better i would think i was an explorer, though at one time i typed myself as one but remeasured and came out gatherer, really rethinking this.  :-/

Thanks for your input!  ;)

Red Lilac,

I'm wondering do you get the same symptoms whether corn is ingested or in the air?.

If the ingredients were all natural, I doubt this was the case, but conventional products generally
contain a lot of artificial ingredients which likely could have irritated your mucous membranes.
I find that I can't go into a florist anymore...they spray all flowers with some kind of chemical that
extends their longevity.  I can actually smell the chemical in the air....and immediately start coughing from the irritant.  We are constantly being bombarded with airborne chemicals.  Most perfumes are comprised of mostly artificial ingredients.  Unless these soaps and bath gels were made from natural botanicals, I'm pretty much thinking this is what got to you.

Like most places that have "a certain amount" of tourist trade, we have quite a few gift shops in our area.  I made the mistake of going into one several weeks ago just to look around.  It seemed there was no area of the store that didn't have displays of "scented stuff"  - sachet packets, candles, incense,etc..  I was not in that store very long, but by the time I left I was not only all stuffed up but half sick to my stomach.  It took about an hour to get those smells out of my nose!

As far as foods:  I had to quit eating organic cow milk yogurt because it gave my sinuses fits.  I am now using goat milk yogurt and if I don't eat way too much I am fine.

Both, but I didn't know about the corn in the air issue until last January.

I also am sensitive to some perfumes, air fresheners & flowers.  I carry Benadryl with me always because my throat tightens up.
