Curious why gatherers can have broccoli but not cabbage or cauliflower. I'm guessing its because broccoli has more of the beneficial thiols or indoles so it gets front billing.....but still wonder. I like cabbage and cauliflower also. There is the goitrogen issue with all....

interesting link, Lola. I can't actually understand it, but kind of like with physics, I get a broader picture of what I don't know! ;)
One thing I'd like to know is which of the brassicas has the most sulfur, and the next to most, and on down to the least. I have reason to believe I should not overconsume sulfurous vegetables, bu then what can you eat? I will go research this online....

Hey, Squarepeg, well it's not that easy to find answers to this one. It looks as if broccoli has rather less sulfur than cauliflower or brussels sprouts, or esp. mustard greens, which are avoid for me anyway. But the data was not handy....I guess I'll go on eating broccoli now and then.

She linked Dr. D's essentially complete list of determination factors in the food ratings. That is pretty much the essence of why we can't say "one food and not another" because of the combination of possible reasons for one food v. another.

From time to time one can make educated guesses for some foods for specific GenoTypes. For an individual with a SWAMI those occasions are less common.

this topic also interests me, I tend to stick to broccoli, spinach, and silverbeat (chard) mostly.
Even in Ayurvedic medicine/healing, cabbage and cauli is not highly recommended for some constitional types, especially if the veg is raw, as tends to inbalance the person, nervous and endocrine system, therefore putting a stress on the system and weakening it over time. So usually specific spices in ghee is served to balance the meal.
So, best to have variety, and if you have blood sugar issues/weak pancreas, then make sure not too many of the high GI veg unless you are getting enough exercise to stimulate insulin receptors in the cells. I find broccoli and greens better in evening now as lower in starch/sugars.

I'm grateful Dr. D'Adamo didn't go into all this in his books. I don't think I ever would have signed on, if I'd been expected to read or research Why Walnuts and Not Pecans; Why Eggplant and Not Zucchini; Why Mint and Not Chamomile...............

Just a heads-up to newbies that such investigations are not, for the many millions who follow the D'Adamo work, expected (though, of course, they are not forbidden!). Don't be discouraged if you don't have scientific answers for all (or even most) side-by-side comparisons of food items on your diet.
My own approach would involve just making everything delicious!

Thanks, C-sharp! Great chart! Well, just as I suspected, mustard greens, cabbage,  and brussels sprouts are the high ones, broccoli not so bad, medium. This doesn't mean that's why they are black dots according to Dr. D., of course. Though it may be.

Here's how I view it:

All of Dr D's diets are much more complex than anything else on the market. It's not as simple as "cut carbs" or "avoid nightshades" or "eat lots of nuts." Every individual food is made up of thousands of different components. Some of these are good for you, some are bad, and some are neutral. To further complicate things, we're all unique individuals, and the very components that are healthy for me might be the ones that are harmful for you.

I recognize that this complexity exists, but I don't have the knowledge or ability to sort it out myself. I trust Dr D's analysis because he's so much better at this than I am.

Ruthie, I totally agree :) I get broccoli and spinach on my  Swami super-list...but not cauliflower, cabbage nor brussels sprouts....but I knew this already !
Somehow, I just cannot digest the latter three, causing terrible wind and discomfort...whereas I´m perfectly fine with broccoli and spinach ,which I prefer anyway  :P
