Hi all,
Any guidance for a newbie transitioning to the A diet as the weather gets colder since I won't be making any mashed potatoes and gravy etc?  It seems most of the diet does not consist of warming foods.  Any insights welcome, thanks.  :)Joie.

How about mashed rutabaga?  :)

You could even add a tasty cheese.  :P

Substitution is the way to start. In the longer run think about what you can have, rather than what you can't.

nutritional yeast can be substituted for cheese sometimes

Choose whatever is appropriate for your diet from this list.

Warming Herbs, Spices and Foods

- basil

You can mash any compliant root vegetable in place of potatoes. It won't taste exactly the same, but it will still be yummy. Make your own gravy with a compliant broth and thicken it with rice flour.

I know what you are talking about!  But simply load up on what the BTD allows (do not forget your Neutrals) and where many layers to keep yourself warm and comfortable.  This is especially good advise if you are on the thin side.  :)

Eventually you may type yourself to see what genetic type you are using Dr. D's book, Change Your Genetic Destiny (or, The Genotype Diet as it was first titled).  You will then undoubtedly see differences in your prescribed diet.  Finding out whether you are a secretor or a non-secretor will also change some food choices.  The differences between these two are well defined in Dr. D's book, Live Right 4 Your Type.

Eventually you may get a SWAMI for yourself and you can eat sweet potatoes!  Hmmmm, hmmmmm, hmmmmm.  Love my SWAMI!  This is a personalized diet created just for you!

Relax and enjoy this wealth of knowledge you have just found.  This is a lifestyle change, not a typical diet.  I used to do those and with little to no success.  This "adventure I have been on has lasted for 17 years and going stronger than ever.

Take a soup pot, heat it, add some ghee and some compliant oil.  Saute some onion and garlic.  Add some soy milk and other veges.  Cover and simmer until the veges are tender.  Add some herbs, salt to taste, thicken with some arrow root and water, and ladle into a soup bowl.  Eat with a compliant bread.  If you get turkey or chicken, you can make a turkey or chicken noodle soup with some of the spelt noodles from Dr. D's website.  Or, bake a turkey thigh until is it is tender and golden brown (2.5 hours at 325), make a compliant dressing with lots of sage, open a can of green beans, and have yourself an early Thanksgiving dinner.  Mmmm, I'm getting hungry.

I find that vegetable-based carbohydrates are essential to keep me warm.  I already get enough fine meat, fish, vegetables and healthy fats.  But without carbs, I'm chilly.

I wonder if you're sensitive to the cold.  Maybe your thyroid is sluggish and needs support with iodine-rich sea vegetables?

Thanks very much for all the tips. As someone asked I am on the thin side so that can be a bit of a factor.  I hope to try some of the more tailored approaches eventually too (SWAMi, non-secretor etc). :)

Protein can be warming.
If your induction into the BTD represents a major diminution of your animal-food intake, this could explain any new feeling of coldness.
If so, it could be a signal that your withdrawal from meat shouldn't be too rapid. Definitely emphasize your beneficial poultry and fish on your way to less animal-food at all.
