I have just seen an example of data from 23and me and it's looks pretty good value for people in the usa, however it is nearly twice the price to get tested from the UK.

Does anyone one have any other examples of companies that do similar things.

I have already done the geographic project , years ago but only did one half. now though you can only do both half and the cost is double 23 & me. either way it too expensive to do three lots of them again for all of us.

unless i order it from a friendly american friend and they post it to me? but i imagine the expense is having to Currier it so the sample doesn't break down.

surely there is a British company that can do the same thing.

A ha  :) well I don´t have the income right now - but I sure would love to test as well. So IF you find a EU/UK based program please let us know.

There are other UK DNA testing programs.  Mostly in regards to establishing paternity.

The UK tests tend to provide much less information.

To get comparable information from a UK based operation you will be spending several hundred pounds (sometimes thousands of pounds).  23 & Me is still cheaper even paying the shipping.

There are some discounts for ordering several at once. Three kits shipped to the UK would $436 US.

23 & me is $100 vs Geographic which is $200.  What’s the difference in their products?

23 & Me gives you a lot of health related data related to your genome in addition to haplogroup.

23 & Me also gives you a lot of SNP information that you can spend hours pour over and not determine if a particular NP is of significance or not.

The GenoGraphic project only gives you Maternal & Paternal haplogroup if male and Maternal  haplogroup if female.

I took a look at this chart of product comparisons:  http://www.isogg.org/wiki/Autosomal_DNA_testing_comparison_chart

I decided to go with the 23and me.  I ordered one for my son too.  He only knows my side of the family, has no siblings, 1st cousins or aunts/uncles to compare heath issues with.  Now I have to wait for the kit to arrive then 4-6 weeks for results.

It is amazing, RL! I did it and now I want to have my son do it. I sent the results thru genetic genie (online) for an even greater eye opener!! 8)

Thanks - looks like the options for Europeans are not that good or precise- I guess I´ll wait ( I can´t really afford to anyhow- but I am not particulate interested in health issues more the DNA / historical part

just checking, does the 23&me tell you your full blood alleles if you are other than a blood type O?

eg if you are a blood type A but Ao?

also if i just got the test dna test done for my daughter would that not tell a lot about both parents at a cheaper cost ;)?

They tell you both Alleles. But they also tell you not to rely on their determination.

In my case their data suggests that I am AA when in fact I am AO.

Also tell you A subtypes.
Both of my A alleles are supposed to be A102.

Testing daughter will tell you mother's maternal haplogroup. Testing daughter will tell you neither haplogroup of father.

Thanks - I hope I remember this in 4-6 weeks when I get my results.  The kits were waiting for me when I got home from work last night.  I'm hoping my son can come over today so I can send them in Saturday.

I'm excited(dance)
