I have a question that I thought I had right before...  low glycemic foods are better for me?

Yet foods listed in alpha order do not accommodate this.

Now I am wondering if I should change the Swami foods further to accommodate the low glycemic needs to affect my diabetes numbers?


Is diabetes helped with low glycemic foods?   

Which is better (not O related) just in general: apple or banana?  

Watermelon would be high, as is pumpkin?  

Onions raw might be ok, yet once browned it becomes sugar rich?

Red peppers and broccoli would be great,

Yet green peas and carrots are not...

Parsnips is 10 times that of lettuce or broccoli, and dabble that of carrot.  
While some rice and grains are not worse than carrots...

Are vegetables better than fruit?  Is there a difference in sugars/ besides the glycemic indexes?


In the end is Swami ever addressing the glycemic index in foods as one being better than the other?  

What would be the tick off in my SWAMI to get a low glycemic food list from it?

I'm pretty sure that GI is taken into account, along with many other factors. The entire Gatherer diet is designed to be lower in GI, as diabetes/blood sugar control issues are a hallmark of the Gatherer profile. I'm also pretty sure that GI is the sole reason basmati rice has a higher rating than regular rice (in both my personal SWAMI and in the Gatherer diet in the book- I don't know what your SWAMI says.)

I know that my SWAMI gives me 5 cups of veggies a day, and only half a cup of fruit- as compared to my Explorer daughter's SWAMI that recommends 3 cups of fruit per day. She literally eats as much fruit in a day as I do in a week. I have to shop differently when she's here.

Use some common sense with the portion sizes. SWAMI does not differentiate between carrots and lettuce; they're both "live foods." I also eat a lot more fat than SWAMI wants me to eat- I seem to need it to keep my  blood sugar stable.

I don't ever eat fruits plain. I often put 1/3 to 1/2 of a banana in the blender, and then I add 1-2 cups of greens, 1/4 cup of liquid egg whites, plus some flax or chia and almond meal (and some water)  before blending. The GI of the resulting mixture is quite low, due to all the protein, fiber, and fat, even if the banana has a high GI by itself.

Yes to all you say THANKS. .. I would maybe cook the eggwhites before blending them .. Do you blend or juice?  meaning eat the pulp or juice?

higher as in from beneficial to diamond, .. same portions?  

I think the diamond list does not include low glycemic food lists.. I see watermelon  and rasberries as diamond.. and yet they have way different glycemic levels..

Right, because GI is not the ONLY factor considered in SWAMI. It's one of them, along with what nutrients the foods contain and how bio-available they are.

I  buy pasteurized egg whites in the "dairy" section of the supermarket. They're not "solid" and can still be scrambled or used in baking, but they're not "raw" either. This is the least expensive form of protein I can find to add to my smoothies; Dr D's type O protein powder is beyond my budget.  They're really intended as a "cholesterol free egg substitute" for those who buy into the hype about egg yolks (and saturated fat and cholesterol) as being unhealthy, but they work for my purpose too.

There are also liquid egg whites that are 99% egg whites and 1% coloring and chemicals to make them taste more like whole eggs when cooked in a frying pan like scrambled eggs. I don't buy that kind; I buy the kind with only one ingredient.

That, or SWAMI was already set to "blood sugar stabilizing foods" to begin with. Did you already have any family history of diabetes mentioned?

This can happen in a variety of areas.  If the SWAMI analysis indicates that you are prone to develop a health condition because of other info you put in it can not matter whether you check that condition or not.

Another way to look at this is that if diabetes treatment gets turned on because of other settings, turning it on again makes no difference since that treatment modality is already switched on.

Hi ruthiegirl, thanks for your feedback.  I can't tell from the report if I indicated a family history of diabetes, but I probably did.  Also, I chose to minimize (or counteract) Advanced Glycation Endproducts (AGE).

I think the report should include a list of all the inputs and their settings.

Thanks C_sharp.  That makes sense, but still I think the fruit and carb portions are too high for me.

sorry my dearest Goldie...but I'm aksing myselve...about your questions.... this is obvious that low glycemic index  of food is helping to controle diabetic issues...
and I've tried to point out the issue about STH and insulin risings.. this is true facts about hormonal interactions... das eine bedingt das andere! warum dann diese Frage? Sorry aber wen versuchst Du hier haftbar zu machen als Therapeutin ausser Dich selber ??)
