Here I am, back and needing support.  It has been a few years since I was regularly on the site, and lots has been going on.  After going thru cancer and all ten years ago, thought I was out of the proverbial woods.  Now I have a whole new issue.  Carotid artery blockage.  It is not severe, though I was told that some of the stuff is the soft variety and can loosen.  I am trying to get with the diet, but am not very successful.  A combination of nerves and depression.  Suggestions?  Thanks, Trish 44

Just stress, worry, and depression in the way.  Seem to go grab foods too often when in that frame of mind.  Yes, the wrong foods.

Have few times a day freshly brewed green tea, and a glass of freshly juiced green vegetables in the morning - great energizer.

And the greatest energizer: there's nothing like an animal protein breakfast to cheer you up for long hours.

When you go shopping, buy a lot of the Superfoods and especially Diamond foods to stock your kitchen with.  Think about what types of foods are "comfort foods" for you, that you are prone to grab when you're feeling down, and see how you can plan ahead for those times by having a beneficial solution.  Maybe you have to buy foods for someone else in the house and that can be tricky - especially if those foods are bad for you.  Don't let your own stock of healthy things run out - look ahead.  :D

Start by focusing on the good foods you CAN have, not the ones you need to avoid. Add in some superfoods as soon as possible. Also try to keep healthy snacks on hand- you might need some "compromise foods" for the transition. If you find yourself reaching for potato chips, for example, you may want to keep some sweet potato chips on hand, even if they're made with "avoid" oils. Keep some compliant baked goods on hand if you'd otherwise be reaching for wheat-laden cakes and cookies. Also keep actual healthy snacks on hand, such as nutss and fresh or dried fruits.

You may want to get past the "wheat addiction" before you cut back on starches and sugars. You want comfort food- reach for compliant comfort food. When you've been on this for a while and have done some healing, you can wean off the sweets.

It really helps to "not keep junk in the house" if you can manage it. If you have other family members who are eating this stuff, that may not be practical for you.

Go easy on yourself- it's REALLY hard to make positive changes while depressed. Start each day with high protein foods and lots of veggies. Then fill in with starchier foods as needed so you don't feel deprived. You'll likely cut back gradually on the carbs by doing that. Don't worry at all about weight at this point- get your body and brain healthy first. If you overdo the portions on healthy stuff- that's OK for now.

Trish44, good on you for coming back.  I fell off the wagon a couple of years ago and am back with the program again.  If you're not taking any meds for your depression, a natural remedy that also helps with appetite control is 5HTP.  I personally take 200mg at night (helps me go to sleep) and then a 200mg time released pill in the morning.  When you're depressed it can be hard to get into an exercise regime, which is very hepful, but hard to get going.  One way to to ease into it is to just get out the door and walk, anywhere safe where you can let your mind wander and at least get some blood flowing.  It is better than sitting down all day, and a good walk is very good for both the mind and body.  Finally, I keep a lot of healthy snacks nearby because I travel a lot in my job.  I always travel with bananas and UniBars, and a homemade trail mix of pumpkin seeds, walnuts, carob chips, dried bananas, dried pineapple, and other compatible dry snack foods.  I hope this helps and I wish you the very best.

You have made the first big step by starting back again with your healthiest eating plan/way of life possible! ;) I agree with all the great advice above.
I really believe in the walking to begin. Like 29Palms Lady said, just go out the door and start walking. Take deep breaths and feel "healing" begin! :)

We all have good and bad days/weeks, its normal. I am roughly 80% compliant most of the time but I found that it is pointless to beat yourself up over it because each day is new and you simply start again. ;)You can do it! ;D 8)

I don't know where you are in Texas but I recently visited my Aunt in Dallas and my Uncle down in Texas hill country, outside of New Braunfels. Even though I was on vacation I would get up each morning and head out the door to walk. Just listening to the birds and watching the critters play, feeling the crisp air and enjoying a little solitude was so theraputic!  8)

Thank you all so much for your kinds words of support.  I know the exercise is crucial, and it has been lacking due to a bad knee.  But it is getting better, and I have been doing a bit of walking.  The big problem with food is cooking for my husband, and having to go with him to have ice cream or eat out.  I know when I get going, these things won't bother me, but it is taking me a while to start.  I have improved my choices since first posting, and am just about ready for some juicing and vegies.  Cajun, I am in Fredericksburg, the next time you come to the Hill Country, let me know, we will get together.  Ok, tomorrow is a new day, and it will be a good day!  Thanks so much.

Trish 44 you are here, you will get all that is needed to make it back..

In AA they say.. one is to many and a 1000 is not enough.. true for avoid food also..

Be patient and join the eating disorder thread as well, it might have some good suggestions.. also the thread on Aroma threapy.. I will give all a try, as I am out of control also..

I wish us both Much love and understanding .. Loving you is :  Unconditional Positive 'self' Regard, and the same on what you feel toward others.  The change in voice tone makes a big difference.  It might get us and others past being 'upset' all day long... All the best..
