Cigarettes....though I did quit in Feb this year, and know I will never go back to them now.

After that, going "cold turkey" on: - coffee, black tea, sugar, wheat, corn, potatoes was relatively "easy".

I do rather enjoy a glass of wine, but since confirming my Non Secretor Hood last week, I feel less guilty about that indulgence...maybe it (the red wine) helps to kill off some of the invaders that my saliva, sweat, tears etc don't deal with?

My mom at 84 went to the Near East with younger friends. Mom only drank beer, while the others did not care.  Mom never got intestinal problems, all the others ended up in hos[itals.  ;D

When I look at it from here, I think all other things are easy by comparison.  I wish I liked green tea. :(

I think foods are probably "hard to give up" only for certain types of reasons.

One type of reason is Taste, and I think (based upon attitudes prevalent on the Forum) most of us are willing to forego Tastes if necessary.

Another type of reason is Convenience. Certain foods may be convenient due to one's job, schedule, lifestyle, location, or what the rest of one's family eats, for instance.

Another type of reason is Social: Conviviality with friends, or traditions embedded in one's family history around holidays, foods it might seem rude to reject.

Another type of reason is addiction, such as what one finds difficult to give up in caffeine-containing foods. These are harder to find substitutes for than, say, sugar or wheat, though sugar and wheat are certainly convenient.

When prioritizing among categories of foods it might be advisable to give up, it can pay to consider each of these *categories* in one's decision-making. I've noticed that many opt to continue major family traditions and to perhaps cave when it comes to certain special cases of Convenience or Taste.

San J - you make a good point, though I think many people find it hard to rationalise that way when in the grip of a craving...

I used to really "enjoy" DH's lovely home baked wheat toast, but it started making me feel SO tired after eating it, I would be yawning, heavy limbed, lethargic as hell - Although never diagnosed formally, I'm sure I was becoming pre-diabetic, so I found GTD and went cold turkey on just about everything overnight, and ate only Diamond foods for a Gatherer. Boy! Did I get results fast (along with a few withdrawal headaches)  :(

Anyway, dear DH (O Hunter - not very compliant, but working on him!!) - has switched to Spelt flour for his toast, and the aroma is VERY tempting at times, but I won't let myself be tempted into giving in - it's just not worth going back there... ;)

That's probably the order of difficulty I'd give them.  I can avoid all but coffee if I don't buy it and bring it home.  But I can't function properly w/o coffee -- I will always buy it and drink it.

Cheese. It's so easy to eat, comes in a world of different varieties and textures, and was something I would swap out in place of starch on days I did not eat starch. But I stopped once i got hyperthyroidism and I don't miss it except when I really crave a not-so-sweet dessert.

Well, what I was saying was that if threads like this encourage us to identify what we are likeliest to crave and under what circumstances, we are in position to do what Peter D'Adamo does, for instance, with his beloved Stuffed Cabbage, an Avoid for him -- i.e., plan for it, look forward to it, and enjoy it, in a way that works for him and his family. Does that mean he absolutely never can "crave" that food at other times? Not necessarily.

Many followers of his work are far less than 100% "compliant". By definition, a, say, 70% compliant adherent is prioritizing indulgences somehow.
So, in answer to you, w-the-w, the "grip" of a craving is not the time to rationalise, but when analyzing (as this thread encourages) which foods and drinks are hardest to give up, and when planning one's degree of compliance overall, then rationality helps, nay, is essential.

The one thing I can't give up is coffee.  I've been able to give up dairy and all wheat products, as well as all other avoids, but not coffee.  When I try to give it up, no matter how slowly, my migraine headaches come back, my mind is slow, and I simply can't wake up in the morning.  At this point, I see more cost than benefit to giving it up.  I figure I'm 95% compliant with my SWAMI (BTD and GTD blend) diet even with the coffee, which is a whole lot better than what it was before I started all this.

At night, after dinner, before bed....a little something sweet!
cookies, brownies, lemon bars, fruit tarts....even though I make them gluten free, they still have either honey, raw, maple or date sugar or molasses.
I am not usually hungry, I think it is a bad habit that I fight daily! :-/
It is actually very easy to eat by and enjoy my swami all day...it is that "nightly demon", ugh!

I would agree - COFFEE! I tried to have coffee every third day and green tea in between but
1) I don't like tea and 2) even with 3 cups I don't feel the caffeine...

cajun  could a better sugar work as well?  like a spoon of agave?  is it the sugar or the chewing foods with the sugar?  We do need energy to sleep, some sugar/sweetness might give you the -emotional 'security' - effect of sleepyness.  Would banana be the same?  
...so many use milk before sleep.. must be a reason why... milk has sugar...
