Hi,
I hope someone can help me.Many years ago(80's) I was given "Eat Right For Your Type" and having determined I was A, changed my diet and sure enough it worked a treat.Although there were many foods such as apples, blueberries and grapefruit that although meant to be okay for me to eat,caused me problems,by and large I did well in the intervening years.
Now however,whether my digestive system has disintegrated(I am in late 50's) or something else has happened,I am now reacting badly to foods that were staple for years.Green beans particularly.Brown rice also seems to be causing an issue.Both of these are bringing my skin out in postules and acne like skin problems whereas I never had acne even as a young teenager.I know that one cannot change blood group( I am right?) I am wondering if there are other changes take place that might explain this reaction and where I might go next diet wise.I am taking digestive enzymes which are just about keeping the skin calmed down but it's a struggle.I live in Ireland and so buying the supplements recommended here is a bit cost prohibitive.Any opinions and/or advice would be very welcome.Regards

Welcome!

There's so much more information available since Dr D published his first book, as he's spent the past 30 years doing more research. There are more published books (Live Right 4 Your Type, the Blood Type Diet Encyclopedia) but much of that information is also available on this website.

Plus, there's the whole Genotype Diet (GTD)route. It's basically another system for figuring out "who should eat what" that takes into account more than just blood type. That system may be a better fit for you, especially if you're not doing well on BTD (BTD).

The most advanced dietary system is SWAMI. It's a computer program that computes a personalized diet for each user, after you input some information about yourself. It's a blend of BTD and GTD values.

why don t you get retested for safety and to give you a peace of mind?


also, the more your gut needs fixing the stronger will be your reactions even to beneficials in your list


may I suggest if starting new again, after so many years, why not read the genetic destiny book and begin your new genetic resetting personalized approach to healing?

Just because "the list" shows a food beneficial or neutral for does not mean it is ok for YOU.
If a food does not agree with you, stop eating it.  You are an individual.

Also check if things have been sprayed on the foods you are eating?! Maybe you are reacting to those?

the glands/organs/intestines can get weaker or sluggish over time, as one ages.  I would stick mostly with vegetables to eat with your protein source, and some fat which is already in fish/seafood or some other proteins sources. A dollop of butter/ghee over veg is good. I have a little sheep or goats yoghurt to get some animal based fat which adds a more yang/balancing subtle energy to my body/system.I believe the weakening in my own body, has come mainly from grain & gluten/seeds which are high in omega-6 fats/too many nuts/too many simple carbs from fruits and sweeteners. I had a hair mineral analysis (also checks for heavy metal toxicity) done in May and this has helped too so I can refine my choices further. With me, the increase in animal protein, more cooked vegetables, one raw fresh carrot juice every morning, and some supplements is helping, plus more rest and taking it easier to allow healing to occur at cellular level.

Beside the blood type, an additional significant factor was added by Dr. D and introduced in the book "Live Right for Your Type": the Secretor Status, which may be either positive (80-85% of the population) or negative (15-20% of the population). Secretor status makes a significant difference in determining your personal diet, in the Blood Type Diet and even more so in the GenoType Diet.

Examples for A secretor vs. non-secretor foods in BTD:

Goat milk and sour cream: neutral for secretors, avoids for non-secretors.

Sunflower seeds, sunflower butter: neutral for secretors, avoids for non-secretors.

Leek: beneficial for secretors, avoid for non-secretors.

Green olives, pickles in brine, cabbage juice: neutral for secretors, avoids for non-secretors.

Cantaloupe, dates, apples: neutral for secretors, avoids for non-secretors.

Honey: neutral for secretors, avoids for non-secretors.

Greetings from across the sea!

I was about to say what Yaeli just did, about secretor status. My Swami completely changes depending on whether I'm a non-secretor or a secretor - like completely. Bennies become avoid and vice versa with a few that hover around the middle.

It might be time to move to the genotype diet as Lola and Ruthie suggest to further refine your eating plan.

Thank you everybody.I have ordered this new Geno - Type book from the library in another county and it will take about a week or more to get it.In the meantime can anyone point me in the direction of how I might figure out how I am secretor/non.I would normally be out of the traps to get this sorted but have had to retire on a disability pension,not related to this issue,and money is tight. Thank you very much again

I can completely relate to not having money for lab tests. I was on BTD for about 2 years before I finally saved up enough for the secretor test. I would have loved to test my whole family at that time, but I'd only saved enough to pay for one test. I still don't know my kids' secretor statuses.

You can use the non-secretor diet itself as a sort of test. Take a look at Live Right 4 Your Type or the TypeBase on this website, and see which foods are OK for A secretors but not for A non-secretors. Cut those foods out of your diet and see if you feel better. This isn't a replacement for the lab test itself, but it's a way to get started if the test is out of reach right now.

Thanks Andrea.In the 80's it was a vet believe it or not who put me in touch with this whole food concept with the suggestion that I read "Not All In The Mind" and from there I explored all options.In the end, the diet that has worked best and really well was predominantly chicken or tofu, brown rice and green beans.This was my main evening meal with gluten free cereal, soya milk and things such as rice cakes, some salmon, odd times turkey, making up the remainder of my diet.No dairy or other meats,no tea,coffee or alcohol.
When I say it worked great I am not being quite accurate because behind the scenes, because of a combination of lack of stuff available( this being Ireland back then) and a definite lack of education on my part,I didn't supplement enough and developed Osteoporosis.That is under control now and the degeneration has been stopped with a new drug being used to stimulate bone growth.
Although foods like say goat's cheese is okay for A's it didn't work for me but I simply didn't eat anything that caused me grief.Now the foods that worked for years although restrictive and obviously not sufficient for all the nutrients I needed, now seemed to be causing trouble,I am lost.Although only cosmetic,if my face breaks out,it is usually a very accurate and quick( carrots will give me red eye rims in about an hour) indication that something has gone in to my system that is not working and that is what is happening now no matter what I seem to eat.Usually I would take anything that was suspicious back out of the diet for 8 days,face would be fine, energy levels back up.Worse case scenario, detox or some chinese herbs and that would sort it.But now,short of not eating anything,I can't figure out what is going on.Have tried Chinese, tried detox and still can't pinpoint what is triggering???? I wonder if the symptoms you are seeing are related to the drug you are taking for the Osteoporosis...  It is possible that your system has developed a sensitivity to (or overload of) the drug and anytime you eat good (for you) foods, the body is using its energy to attempt to flush some of the drug remains out in any manner it can...

My suggestion is to go to SWAMI Xpress and run it both ways to see how much difference there is between the two printouts and use this to determine how important the Secretor test would be for you...  This way you get the most personalized diet for you and some knowledge about how important it would be for you to do the other test.

So true. I don't have very many like that, but there are a few very definitely NOT for me!! For now, anyway!

You're welcome! - Sorry to hear you're having such troubles all of a sudden.

To ascertain your Genotype, you need to take a few body measurements - don't let that put you off - I much prefer the Genotype foods over Blood Type foods - As Blood Type A, you can only be one of 3 different genotypes (there are 6 in total).

You could also try borrowing the "LIVE Right for your Type" from the library. As funds are tight, I expect the SWAMI personalised diet will be out of your reach, but people here do say that the SWAMI diet is like a mix of the Genotype foods and Live Right foods.

In the Live Right foods, you might want to concentrate on the Non-Secretor columns, and pay particular attention to the Tier Two foods.

Yes! In the GenoType Book there are food lists for each of the 6 genotypes.

The typebase food lists are for the Blood Type Diet. When you click on the name of the food in the lists, you'll get its rating for each Blood Type, separately for secretors and for non-secretors ("nonnies"), altogether 8 specific ratings. The typebase ratings are similar to those in the food lists in the BTD book "Live Right 4 Your Type", which followed the first book, "Eat Right 4 Your Type", and in which the secretor status was introduced.

They are not under vegetables, but under bean/legume

All's well! They are beneficial both for secretors and non-secretors, and are cancer superbeneficial for blood type A.  :)

Just to be clear the food lists in the GenoType diet book are for a different system of rating foods.

The GenoType food lists are different from the rating of foods for the blood type system.

You must decide which diet system you are following and use the ratings for that system.

I have been on the blood type diet for many years and was working fine until a few months ago and as I said,things started to go a bit pear shaped with my skin and I was wondering had anything changed.I have done the test and it seems that the blood type is the way to continue with.I think it is a case of eliminating foodstuffs until I can find what is causing the skin condition.It is something in the main meal of the day and it is possible that the suppliers of brown rice have changed something or the veg I am buying,being from a cheaper market,is sprayed or treated somehow.

Thanks yaeli.It's definitely that particular  rice alright.Skin has come right down after leaving it out for the last few days.I will let my system heal and then try to introduce organic and see what happens.Interesting enough I have been eating brown rice pasta and it feels more gentler on the system.Maybe my system has slowed down and is not coping with the relative "roughness" of the brown rice as per the particular company.Will post when have more info but in the meantime,thanks to everybody

Gotta interject, just as an aside, that ER4YT was published in either 1996 or 1997, so it must have been some other book you were given in the '80's.  Maybe something written by Dr. D's dad (also a naturopath and pioneer in exploring the link between blood type and diet).  Either that, or maybe you meant to write the '90's?

I'd like to add something about rice which I learnt from a friend who studied a lot. As my gut underwent intersection twice, it couldn't stand brown rice for a long time. I confined myself to white (organic) basmati rice, and told about my concern to my friend. She reassured me that regarding basmati rice, there it no nutritional difference between the white and the brown. I didn't investigate this further, and I hope this is true. As for me, I didn't have a choice anyway and had to make do with the white basmati rice.

Thanks yaeli,Possum and Spring for comments on rice.Interesting.My face has long been a great indicator of when things are not quite right in my body( some say it is a lot of other things as well but that won't be fixed by changing food so we have to leave it !!) and when it flares up,something has gone in that is not working.I do have problems with sugars and so the comments by Possum would make sense.I always thought that the more "processed" rices such white and basmati were sweeter and that because they had been stripped of their outer hull, were not as "good".Wrong again it seems  ??) But on reflection, it is back to the good old trusting your body because whilst I have eaten brown for decades, in recent times I was more drawn to white and it definitely felt better in the gut after eating.Did I listen ?Nah

I had been eating only brown rice for decades, too. So I was surprised to see white rice as a superfood, but not nearly as surprised as I was when it actually seemed to leave me with a better feeling than the brown. What a shock!

;D Ah, okay, thanks for that clarification. (book2)  I got ER4YT in 1997 and it was brand new then, so I knew something was off about you getting it in the 80's.
