Does anyone know any information about tinned or canned fruit and whether we should be eating it.  As far as I know it's not specified by Dr D anywhere (where's Lola - maybe she'll know!?)

Saw a picture on Facebook of the ten most carcinogenic foods and none of those were that surprising (french fries, doughnuts etc) except tinned fruit was listed!  

Could it be the syrup is a bad refined sugar but if you get cans with fruit juice (like I used to) it's not as bad?
Or is it assuming the tin has BPA lining which can act like a strong oestrogen in the body.  
Is the tin from the can also bad?

I used to eat nearly daily tinned apricots etc with yogurt for a long time before my breast cancer diagnosis?!  ??)

Well I know we can't believe everything on facebook.  What do you think of tinned fruit?

I think the biggest issue is probably bisphenol A in the can linings, which you mention above. BPA is thought to be associated with cancer, particularly breast cancer.


So you could avoid the problem by buying fruit in BPA free cans.

While consuming methanol is not healthy, data associated with it causing cancer in humans is pretty weak.

Here is a study that suggests it may in some situations be cancer preventive:

C_sharp: Are you saying the can linings are only carcinogenic when "activated" by fruit?
Or that this particular lining is only used in cans that contain fruit?

So canned salmon, for instance, is not included in this particular scare?

Bisphenol A is used in can linings for most food products including fish. If you want to avoid the issue select cans that do not contain bisphenol A or eat noncanned food.


Bisphenol A is an endocrine disruptor not only is it associated with breast cancer, but also:

heart disease
diabetes
liver abnormalities
brain development abnormalities in fetuses and young children
hormone development problems in fetuses and young children
erectile dysfunction and other sexual problems in men

For BPA the best thing appears to be avoidance. Natural detoxification will result in lower body levels.

That is one scary list!  Thanks C_Sharp and all.  Hadn't heard of shop naturally looks great.  :)
Unfortunately, in the supermarket you can't tell if cans have the YUK plastic lining till you buy them and you can't be sure it has BPA even then.   ::) The can may be organic tomato paste but the packaging is risky!  They tend use the linings when the food is more acidic.  Now I buy organic tomato paste in bottles.

Here's some conflicting information.  I just found this study which (far as I can tell) reckons that tin builds up toxically in the body (and is one reason they line the tins) but it's associated with FEWER tumours.  http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3291572
Yep, san j, facebook may have oversimplified things there.

Since the tin builds up in your body doesn't sound so good if you can avoid it.  It couldn't be too harmful or they wouldn't be selling it (ha ha catch that joke!)
(I am not blaming any one factor that may have caused breast cancer, being hit on the breast may have started it off tho?  I miss apricots when they are out of season.  Enjoy your summer fruit up North now while you can!)

Symbi, if you buy apricots next season then clean & chop in half, put them in the freezer in glass storage containers (to avoid plastics) they will defrost soft like canned ones.  If they have a special on organic ones at the end of season you could stock up then!

The link with methanol to MS, and Alzheimer's  is more my concern.

cans were originally a way to preserve meat, only later did they start to be used for fruit.

Why not use apricot preserve of just apricots ? with a touch of honey or agave and clove or cinnamom it lasts a lot in the fridge

Great idea Serenity - thanks!  

Caio Signorita Maria!  (I don't speak Italian but learnt a little at school)  I love apricot preserve and can buy a french one with no added sugar, it uses apple and lemon added instead.  Used to love the dried apricots, they helped with iron deficiency but didn't help with keeping the air fresh!  TMI sorry  ;)  Me and sulphites (naughty)  (You can get organic dried ones without sulphites but the mould can be an issue).

Fresh is always best, true Isa!

I am thinking of Noberasco, an extraordinary Italian company with fantastic bio organic dried fruits products. I don't know if they export to Australia. They do export to China and Japan. When you taste it, it's almost being under Italian sun (sunny)(woot)
