What exactly is on the taster strips?

I'm an extreme super taster, and that strip was very unpleasant.

I could have overlooked it in my readings, but I don't recall reading anywhere what the actual ingredient(s) is (or are)?  I was curious if anyone else knew.

artichoke extract
called propylthiouracil (PROP)

Assuming you are using the GenoType kit or strips designated as PROP. The tasted ingredient is propylthiouracil  or   6-propyl-2-sulfanylpyrimidin-4-one.

Normal use of PROP is to treat hyperthyroidism.

Thanks for the quick replies!

Yes, they are the strips provided in the GenoType kit.

Are there any negative side effects of this extract?  Or should certain individuals NOT do this PROP taster strip?

PROP is a hazardous chemical that disrupts normal thyroid function (That is why it is used as a drug). It also destroys the liver.

One time exposure to the slight amount on the paper strips (probably a few micrograms) should not be a problem.

PTC(phenylthiocarbamide) is more toxic than PROP, so if given a choice it is safer to use PROP strips.
